Flights to/from Sofia

I am scheduled for RST’s Best of Bulgaria, September ‘22. I have begun looking at flights from NYC. Air France has a flight that connects through Paris, going and coming. Good price, good times. But in Paris in both directions, I would have to transfer between Orly and DeGaulle airports. Looks like ample time, about 5 hours in both direction. Has anybody had experience with this transfer? Is it convenient? How long does it take?

There are other possible flights, especially on Lufthansa, but the Air France flights, as I have said, show flood times and good price. Probably won’t purchase tickets until early 2022.

Thanks!

In my opinion, a land transfer between different airports is never convenient and I would gladly pay extra to avoid that. And for your trips it adds four immigration checks in Paris. For that reason I would prefer the Lufthansa flights. But you should in my opinion also consider Austrian Airlines, they usually have good connections to eastern Europe.

I agree with Badger. I would pay extra to avoid having to arrange ground transport between two airports in the same city. I have done that a few time with LaGuardia and JFK. Misery. Every time.

It's too early to book now, but also consider Turkish Air. It's a great airline and prices are quite competitive. You will have to transit through Istanbul, but it should be an easy connecting flight.

I would worry quite a bit about an airport transfer on the way to Europe, because I am brain-dead when I step off the transatlantic flight. I would try to avoid such a transfer on the way home, but I could probably deal with that if I had to. I would only be tempted if the savings were really substantial and the travel times required for alternative flights were ugly. I've never come close to facing that sort of decision--probably because I have succeeded in avoiding flights with connections in London or Paris.

Maybe if you mentioned the percentage of savings versus a non connecting flight it might seem more appealing but I tend to agree with others who have responded about airport transfers ..... it usually is not a recipe for success.

Thank you all for the quick responses. I think you’ve convinced me to look for flights without airport transfer. The thought of immigration/passport control is alone pretty convincing - avoid….. Lufthansa is the likely choice, tho the suggestion to consider Turkish is intriguing. Still plenty of time to do the research before committing.

Again, thanks!

I don’t know how far upstate you are but there are a number of flights out of Toronto that might fit the bill.

I flew Lufthansa, trans in Frankfurt to local airline associated with Lufthansa, to Sofia (SOF) easy and worth it, no hassles. I would avoid transfer in DeGaulle, (airport is always under construction, you never land at a gate and always have to be bussed in to terminal, always late!) or attempting ground transfer to Orly. k

Thanks, Kathy. I have been looking at flights out of NYC (either from JFK or Newark). Best itineraries and fares suggest Lufthansa through Frankfurt or Munich. Another possibility is Turkish Airlines through Istanbul. Will make the leap in a couple months, since my tour is not until September. Watching fares and the Covid situation. I live in upstate NY but flights out of here add another stop and fares skyrocket!

Was your trip to Sofia on an RST tour? Any suggestions, especially for my free day in Sofia before the official tour commences?
