Our favorite place to stay in Lauterbrunnen is in either Mürren or Wengen.

Mürren and Wengen aren't in Lauterbrunnen, they are 3 different places. Lauterbrunnen is at the bottom of the valley, Mürren and Wengen are half way up the valley on opposite sides.

If "Lauterbrunnen" includes Wengen, then I would recommend Alpenruhe Kulm hotel on Galliweidli in Wengen. It has balconies with gorgeous views of the Jungfrau & valley, and their breakfast was excellent.

We stayed at the Crystal Hotel in Lauterbrunnen in 2010. We had a nice big room with a balcony overlooking the main street. Breakfast was included. As someone posted before this, Lauterbrunnen is a town, not a region.

Chris---I do know that Mürren and Wengen are not "in" Lauterbrunnen. I was trying to make a joke, but it guess it didn't come across.

Our favorite in Lauterbrunnen is the Hotel Staubach. Nice rooms at a fair price (for Switzerland), good breakfast and a very helpful staff. We were in one of their small rooms overlooking the valley. The view was simply fantastic. Have a great time, we'll be there in September.

If I were staying in Lauterbrunnen, I wouldn't. 20 minutes up a cable car and a tiny cliff edge train (what Rick used to call a panorama fahrt) to Muerren and paradise views and about the same price.

There are all sorts of price and amenity range up in Muerren. For cheap and cheerful (and shedloads of personality and an exceptionally gracious hostess who knows all about the area (including marathoning there)) is Denise. We like the Jungfrau, as do RS groups, for a bit bigger rooms and private bath. Folk here all will have their favourite, based on price and what you want.

I know there are some who disagree with me but if I go to the mountains I will be in the mountains, not in a valley looking up.
