Family Europe: Amsterdam to Rome

Hi. My grandson and I are taking this trip June 26 this year. I am hoping we fit in and have a good group experience. He is just turning 15 so maybe he can meet some teens on this trip to make it more fun. Also looking at weather and trying to pack light but the forum seems to say weather is so variable. Should we bring warm clothes? Hope to hear from some who have taken it or another in the same cities. Thanks

Just take light clothes maybe light sweater and a water resistant jacket for Amsterdam. I come from Chicago, found that it is warm in Italy year round, hot in summer but without humidity.

The options, fun for a 15 year old are not certain

Thank you for the clothing info. Your assessment of fun for a teen is worrisome. Hope he loves it though. With other kids on the tour maybe a good outcome.

Jazz has never been on the family Europe tour so don't put too much stock in his opinion .

I took my 11 yr old on the RS family tour , out of 26 of us , 14 were kids between 8-17 .
The thing is , all the kids hung out together ! All ages ! And all nice kids !
He will have fun . This tour is aimed at families having fun .

My daughter dumped me by day two to sit at the back of the bus with all the kids .

You should each take a light windbreaker / rainjacket , with a sweater or lightweight fleece to layer under neath or not . Bring some shorts for him ( it will be roasting hot in Rome !!) and a sundress or shorts or capris for you .

He should bring one pair of jeans at least , all the kids ( European too) wear them .

I know you will have a blast ! I envy you ! One of the funniest trips I've take note with my kids ( I have three and they've all been to Europe with me , but only my daughter got the tour )

We took our teenage daughter on a RS's tour during the summer and she made fast friends with other teens and had thoroughly enjoyable experiences. She stays in touch with another girl to this day. Pack light and in layers. A light/medium weight sweater/fleece and a rain resistant jacket are helpful. Have a superior trip!

Whew, I feel better with your replies. Thanks. I was told there are a few teens and other kids on this tour so I felt pretty good. But your advice make me feel great. Thanks for the tips on the jeans and layers which I have ready. I told him no jeans but seems the whole world lives in them so he will take them too. Will scare up some fleece for him but we have the rest of layers from REI and living in northern California I have multiples of fleece. We took a brief tour ourselves two years ago to London and Paris but I can't wait for him to see how other Europeans live and lived. Probably won't go again myself but want this opportunity for him. Thank you so much.

Be sure to have something other than jeans.

End of June in Rome will likely be hi 80s

yes.. rome is hot so bring shorts..but make sure he has some shorts that go right over the knee you cant get into Vatican and many churches with knees showing. ( this goes for you too.. no bare shoulders or knees. I tied a gauzy scarf onto my purse..when entering churches I could drape it like a shall around my shoulders .

Jeans are hot.. but on this tour there will be plenty of other places to wear them.. Amsterdam is never that hot, and in Switzerland you will likely want them in evenings too!! Paris can go either way.. I have been there many times in summer ( about 20 times over last 40 years) and it can be lovely, it can be cool, and it can be roasting.. its a crap shoot.

Thank you again. I think I'll wear leggings on the way over and have an option besides crops in case its chilly. With a light fleece and a windbreaker it takes care of the cooler weather. Great tip on the shorts for him. Will do. And I like the idea of a scarf for many uses. That is one thing that can change an outfit, become a wrap or cover up for churches. We are gearing up and getting ready.
One more thing - how about ideas for sleepless nights or jet lag. Just did a drug store run and its confusing. Melatonin? I have taken Tylenol sleep before but don't need the pain relief. Well, Maybe for my feet!

Thanks

Hi Patiosun,

My husband, myself and our 2 girls (ages 14 and 16 on our last day) will be on the trip as well! So we will see you there.

My mom has been on a number of tours and she recommends layers since the temps will vary so much on our trip. I was planning on having a pair of leggings just in case and a sweatshirt. I am sure my girls will be as well unless my oldest can't part with her jeans.

I am bringing melatonin just in case as well a small bottle of pain reliever as well.

Hi

I am thrilled to hear from you. We seem to be thinking along the same lines for clothes. I don't like being cold so I am fine with bring layers and leggings for the north and crops for the south. I will bring a small first aid kit with sleep aids too to transition from different time zones. I am looking forward to meeting you and the group and enjoying all the incredible sights. Coming up soon!

While we didn't go on the family tour my teens had a great time on the BOE14 day tour last year. They were 15 & 18 at the time. The two guides did a great job including them. The kids wore jeans or shorts. We went in Aug & it was very hot in Italy. Our tour did not include many Churches so wasn't as big as a concern. Your teen should honestly wear what makes them comfortable. You will see jeans everywhere. Have fun!

Thank you LA

Your reply helps and I am glad that your girls had such a great time. I know the guides will be good with including everyone and I am getting over all the advice that we should look like Europeans. All the photos I see shows we all look pretty much alike everywhere and i am not worrying about it. We did fine in London and Paris two years ago so we will wear what we do here. I was over thinking this trip so we now will go and enjoy it all. Light and easy and maybe pick up something along the way that we love to bring home.

If all the people who wrote represent the folks that take RS tours we are in good company.

Best

I'm so glad it was a wonderful trip! Our London -> Florence family tour was our first RS tour, and we're already angling to do the tour you just completed. Probably June 2019.
