Euro suits at French hotels?

I keep reading that many French pools require the high and tight euro swimsuits instead of American-style trunks. Do hotel pools catering to tourists typically have that requirement? I want to make sure need them before I invest in 4 euro suits for the trip.

I would contact your hotel directly and ask if Speedos are required. They are required in public pools. They don’t want people wandering around all day in board shorts, then hopping in the pool.

That's interesting , travel4fun -- are there any other additional explanations for the speedos requirement?

“The French believe that by wearing the more common baggier swimsuits - sweat, sand and dust is more likely to enter the pool. But by wearing tight-fitting trunks, less dirt is held on which in turn means less pollution in the waters. This 1903 law mostly applies to public pools including hotels and spas.”

Swimsuits in general are not very hygienic actually, so we should ban them completely. But I suppose that even in France there is no majority for that, hence the compromise...

Public pools require briefs/tight fitting swimwear whereas some resorts and hotels don't. The only way to find out is to contact your hotel.

I've been to many hotel pools in France, and none of them required tight-fitting swimsuits. My usual above-the-knee trunks have always been OK - and I'm talking about dozens of pools.
Same for caps, never seen such a requirement in French hotels (I've seen it at a spa pool in Spain, though).

Of course, it costs nothing to ask.
If you're driving around the country, stopping by Decathlon (itself an experience) and buying 4 swimsuits will set you back 40 euros.

Our family members used 2 different public pools in Paris and speedos for men and bathing caps for those with long hair were required and sold in the lobby. My DIL said there were also required footbaths and showers before they entered the pool. Our son declined to buy a speedo and went for a walk with us.

Hygiene isn't convincing enough, Avi?

Nobody is looking at your youknowwhats, if that's a freak-out for some guys. Some females are wearing thong bottoms and tiny cups while guys freak over Speedos.

FYI speedos aren't the only option. Tight-fitting short trunks like this are also acceptable, and less revealing.

In my YMCA childhood, I was told that the loose threads from coarse-woven fabrics would eventually clog the filters. That said, it can be very hard to persuade people who grew up with private pools that a real shower is appropriate hygiene.

I learn so many interesting things on this Forum. I had no idea this was a requirement in France. My only question is, why do you need 4 of them? They are so tiny I assume they'd be easy to wash in the sink and would dry quickly.

Men’s Speedos are called “budgie smugglers” by the Brits!

Rick would say that they can double as underwear for packing light.

OP's username is "5 traveling", so I assume 4 males?

Stan's comment makes me once again long for a "like" (or "love") option on the forum.

One husband and 3 boys. It would almost be worth the investment just to watch my two middle schoolers navigate the speedo situation!

My LLBean lined shorts that do triple-duty as bathing suit, hot-weather shorts, and colder-weather layering do not fray or pill or shed anything to get caught in pool filters. And my Asian-influenced lifestyle means pools are preceded by a good scrub.
