English/French phone app

I will be taking the "Best of Paris, 7 day" and "Eastern France" trip next September. I would like to get an app. on my phone so I can start learning a few phrases and some key words. Any suggestions?

Janet,

The best "App" that I've found is the Pimsleur language series (there are several levels). I haven't checked for awhile so not sure if it's available as an App, but you could buy the audio course and transfer it to iTunes or whatever. You might be able to find it at your local Library.

Good for you! You won't need it all that much, but learning a little bit of French will enhance your experience. I used Pimsleur, the CD's in the car while commuting. I never got past the 4th disc and in no way could converse with a native speaker. But, when we were on our own in Paris, I used what I had to order dinner and wine for me and my family. When I finished the waitress said, in perfect English, "you're French is just beautiful". Well, that made it all worthwile!

I think an app is a good idea, as long as your expectation is to learn a few common words, and maybe get a "sense" of the spoken language to acclimate your ears, but to expect anything beyond a few phrases maybe won't happen. The apps others have mentioned should work well.

I would recommend though finding a simple dictionary app, if food is an interest, then make it an off-line menu translator, helps with trying to figure out what some of the dishes are.

You Tube is your friend for most common phrases. We've used www.Travlang.com, foreign languages for Travelers with it's many different choices from Afrikaans to Zulu. Basic words, numbers, shopping/dining, travel, directions, places, and times and dates are all pronounced for you. I could even get along in Zulu and Afrikaans on a trip to South Africa and use the French selection on every trip to Paris.
