I'm considering the April Eastern France tour. I have been to many of the stops, but they are worth another visit as it was many years ago. I've never been to Reims. I like history, art, churches, museums, champagne. What were your favorite moments of the tour while in Reims? If you came early what did you most like visiting on your own? I've just started researching my trip and want to be sure I come early enough to Reims to visit anything the tour doesn't include.
The Museum Of The Surrender was not included when we took the tour. Easy to get there by walking under the train station. Yes, there is a passage way under the station. Also went to one of the champagne houses (not included) using a short local bus route.
The tour did go to the cathedral, but it is definitely worth a longer visit on your own. Especially if there is a light show.
I second TC's comment about the Museum of Surrender - it was well worth it and it's a short walk to it. The Cathedral is beautiful and worth extra time. The light show on the Cathedral at night is wonderful. Also it's worth going to one or 2 of the Champagne houses besides the one you'll go to on the tour - the tours are enough different from each other and the tastings are wonderful. Enjoy the Eastern France tour - it was one of my favorites of all the RS tours I've been on!
We came in a day early to Reims after the Best of Paris tour (back to back tours) and did a champagne bus tour of small family run cellars. In Reims on The Eastern France tour, I thought going down into the cellars at Taittinger Champagne and learning the history of the caverns was fascinating.
A couple things we did on our own:
If you're there Friday or Saturday, and enjoy food markets, Marche du Boulingrin is worth a visit.
We also liked the the self-guided tour at Pommery (bonus: fun contemporary art in the cellars).
Interestingly the tasting of Pommery's Blue Sky champagne was served over ice. Probably the most ice we saw in France at one time, lol.
The Eastern France tour is great, especially if you like wine.
Check to make sure the museum is open again as it was closed for renovations when I was there earlier this year. The website says it should be open, but I discovered when I was there that’s not always true.
I second the Pommery tour! We did this tour a number of years ago but the champagne tour at Pommery was better /different than the one we did as a tour group. We were glad to have had a second champagne cave experience!
Such wonderful suggestions. Thank you everyone. I do love history & sparkling wine!
