Day trip to Trapani or drive from Palermo

I am planning on 3 nights in Palermo and taking several day trips to surrounding towns. Is it better to drive to Trapani and stay overnight or is it better to take a tour from Palermo? I would like to visit Monreal, Cefalu and Palermo from Palermo. After 3 nights in Palermo pick up a car and drive west/southwest. Now I am rethinking and may stay perhaps 2 or 3 nights in Trapani for day visits to Erice, Segesta, Marsala. How far is the drive to Trapani from Palermo? I could not do this without all of your great advice. I am certain I will be posting questions in a few days for my journey from Trapani to Agrigento, then to Syracuse.
Thank you

Lorie, I'll just share my personal experience from two years ago. I rented a car at Palermo Airport and went to Erice for two nights, which I loved, especially in the evenings and early mornings. A misty, ancient, scenic, quiet, hill town at those times, with great food, although much busier and more touristed during the heart of the day. On my full day based in Erice, I went to Segesta (wonderful) and Selinunte (more extensive but less wonderful, IMHO), then planned to visit Marsala and Trapani on the way back. I envisioned those as small towns, but both were really almost mid-sized cities, with lots of traffic congestion, ZTLs and absolutely no street parking. I did not have city maps for those towns, and after confronting total congestion, no parking and ZTLs, I left both places without stopping. So my guidance would be to be sure you have good maps or GPS for those towns, and know where you are going before you enter. (Erice itself was also somewhat confusing upon arrival, but the owner of my inn met me at the entry, and led me to a parking lot and his inn/apartments.) enjoy wonderful Sicilia!
