Clothing for Italy in June

Hi All, we are going in June. I'm looking to reduce what I bring with me. I saw on some forums to avoid dresses. I have 2-3 lightweight, non-wrinkle dresses that I thought would be perfect for this trip. Any advice? Thanks, Mary

We are here right now, big cities and small everyone is in nice casual clothing. Only a few that look like they belong on the beach. There is humidity in the air even if it is in the 70's so add about a 10 degree "feeling" to the Temp. Also prepare for some heat. Last week in Rome we had two 90 degree days with 90 percent humidity. Dresses, skirts, pants ,Capri even decent shorts are fine. But below the knee and shoulders covered at the Vatican no matter what.

Dresses work fine for many travelers, if that's what you're comfortable in for most days of the trip. You will have to plan more than normal which items to have handy in your wallet and which in your money belt, underneath. Among the options in your closet, you could also compare whether three dresses are any heavier than one pair of capris and 3 shirts, for instance. Or just one dress might be enough for your dressier day and evening activities. When it's hot in Italy, I tend to shower and change before dinner as a way to cool off.

I see no reason to avoid dresses - what is the reasoning behind this? I wear dresses quite often. Women in Italy wear dresses, pants, and skirts. If the concern is entering churches, then yes, your knees must be covered. If the dresses are short, wear pants those days or just bring leggings or tights for under the dress in the church, remove after the visit. If they are sleeveless, a scarf to wear as a shawl or a cardigan will work fine. The same goes for if you wear sleeveless tops with pants or skirts.

In general, you can wear what you want. I prefer to look casual but nice, which for me means skirts and sundresses and cute, flat shoes in the summer, skinny jeans and blouses with boots or flats in cooler weather. I usually bring a pair of nice fitting jeans or other pants for evening (gets cooler), and wear with sleeveless blouses or t-shirts.

I was once on a 14-day tour and one woman wore the same dress every day. She'd wash it out at night and it would be clean, dry and wrinkle-free the next morning. She loved to shop and wanted to start her trip with as empty a suitcase as possible!

I find skirts to be cooler to wear in hot weather than pants. I can see that accessing a money belt would mean a visit to a private room, but that's not a big deal. You're not likely to need to do it often.

I wear dresses most of the time... they are more comfortable for me and I always feel appropriately dressed, no matter what. I have a small Maruca purse, cross body that holds my passport, money and cc, do not use a money belt. Usually mid calf length, with a light jacket, so no problem with churches, etc. If it's cooler out just add a pair of leggings. Look at the brand 'comfy'... they are great for travel... hardly wrinkle, and if you get a plain black one you can wear it a number of days with different accessories.

Gosh I wear dresses about 60 % of the time in Europe.. and the other 40% of time I wear skirts. I dislike I shorts.. and pants and capris are too warm for me in places like Rome etc. .( its so hot there in summer I melt)
I like that dressing is so easy.. pull dress on.. done.

I do not need to access my money belt during the day.. so non issue( remember its DEEP storage,, not a purse) .. and I personally do not wear a money belt every day.. leave it in hotel safes usually .. only wear it in transit.

In Italy they are strict about having covered shoulders and knees in churches ( well to knee) so I have a thin light weight gauzy scarf I tie to my purse.. and use a shawl when I need to cover shoulders and dress has no sleeves.

Thanks so much. You confirmed my suspicions that lightweight dresses are a good option.
