Civita Day Pack

What is the recommended total weight of items added to the day pack?

No idea the total weight but I have used my original bag for about 15 years and love it. It has been everywhere and washed numerous times.

Keep in mind that it's a rather light fabric - microfiber - and has no structure of its own. It will handle a bottle of water, a guidebook, a camera, maybe a small snack, a hat, and some sort of extra layer - and that's about it.

It will sag if filled with a number of heavy items. It's a lightweight day bag, not a backpack.

When I'm not traveling, I have often used it locally for my laptop plus a several books, or poduce from the farmers' market, or a change of clothing including hiking boots. For travel, I sometimes have used it as my under-the-seat bag on planes. Mostly, I use it as a day pack for water, snack, raingear, sweater.

I carried mine around with 15 pounds of books in it for a couple of months, training for a tour! The pack held up better than I did, Lol.

I am in physical therapy practicing with a backpack loaded with 15 lbs. The physical therapist is hesitant to add 15 lbs. to the Civita day pack.

I would be concerned with weight distribution - if you're using it for physical therapy, something designed to carry a larger payload might be preferable by being more comfortable.

Putting 15 lb of weights into that bag is probably not a good idea; the weight is too concentrated and likely would put too much strain on a single point for the bag to hold over time.

For your PT routine something else probably would be better.

I have used that day pack several times including as my personal item when flying. I was able to carry a laptop, books, wallet, waterbottle, pouch with a few hygiene items, umbrella, and a few other things without any issues. And my shoulders never hurt or bothered while using the bag.

For clarity, the physical therapist is not using the Civita day pack for practice as she thought the weight would be better placed in a traditional back bag (one she has for balance training).

I have used my Civita day pack as my personal item for years. I fill it with my toiletries and electronics (kindle, charger, phone charger, adapter plugs, nothing heavy). It's about half full. When it's time to get on the plane, I stick my purse inside. The total weight is usually around 7 pounds not counting my purse. The fabric is very lightweight, but it holds up well. Where I have had problems is with the stitching that attaches the straps to the pack. After several years, it will start to come out, so I just re-sew it. I've had at least three bags over the past 20 years. They are so inexpensive (especially when on sale) that I don't mind replacing them. For long hikes, the Civita would be problematic. It has no padding and feels a little lumpy on my back.

Stan uses the Civitá as his day bag when we travel. He usually carries our water, jackets, umbrellas, and guidebooks. Total weight probably between 5 and 7 pounds, maybe a bit more. We've had both our Civitá bags since 2009, and have had no issues. Mine shows a bit of fraying at the top loop, but I haven't had to mend it.
