Central Europe post-tour question

We're on the Central Europe tour starting Aug 24, and will end in Lake Bled on Sun. Sept 7. We will be meeting friends in Ljubljana around 5pm that Sunday, and were planning to spend some time at Vintgar Gorge before heading to Ljubljana. However, I see in the RS guide book updates that they're discouraging visits to Vintgar because of the "hassles of getting there, reserving a slot, and hiking back to your starting point." Does anyone else have an opinion on whether going to Vintgar Gorge on a Sunday morning after the tour ends is a good idea?

And if we decide not to do Vintgar, is there another half-day visit we could make? We won't have a car.

We did Vintgar Gorge on a Sunday last year and honestly? Wouldn’t recommend unless you love bottlenecked boardwalks and queuing for a photo. No shade to nature lovers, but it felt more like a theme park than a peaceful gorge. Without a car, the hike back to Bled wasn’t scenic enough to justify the hassle

Hi Shelly. I guess it depends on what activities you enjoy. We enjoy hiking and pretty much anything outdoors, so for us it was a fun day. Yes, it can take a full half day because of getting there and back. There are different ways to do that. We took the free public bus to near the parking lot and then got a free Gorge shuttle from there. Then after the Gorge, just hiked back into town; nice hike uphill thru a forest to a fun food stand / picnic area, then probably a mile downhill back to town. If you want to save time and hiking distance, you can also pay about 10 Euro per person for a tour bus to and from the Gorge - ask at the Bled TI or you will see fliers at your hotel. Have a great trip!

You could go to Lake Bohinj from Bled by bus in about 30 minutes and hike there. Lake Bohinj ( “Bohinj Jezero”). Is inside Triglav National Park and has lakeside trails. There also is an in-and-out gorge hike on the *Mostnica Gorge near the village of Stara Fuzina which takes a few hours to complete, but you can just hike it during the time you have available, Arriva buses depart from Bled Mlina station and go to Lake Bohinj. Then, either bus from the lake to Ljubljana or take the train from Bohinjska Bistrica— which is 3 miles away— to Ljubljana.
