Canoeing on the Dordogne

We are taking the Loire to the South of France tour this year. On one day, there is an afternoon of canoeing. My husband and I are not particularly interested in doing this activity. We have done other RS tours and know that we don't have to do anything we don't want to do. Does anyone know if there is an alternative to the canoeing? We are capable of entertaining ourselves, if we are in a place where we can do so. Thanks.

You might check with the Rick Steve’s tour department. They are the ones with this information. I know when we took this tour, there was a group of people that didn’t want to canoe but I don’t remember what they did. If I remember correctly the ride was not very long and the group was waiting for us at the takeout but each tour may be different.

We did the Loire tour in 2019. We did the canoe trip, but several members of our group did not. They were able to go elsewhere and met up with us when we returned. Actually, the canoe trip was great fun; the scenery along the river was just spectacular, but you do work for your views.

We visited the area on our own, and did go canoeing. One stop we made was at what had been the English castle during the Hundred Years’ War. Is that already on the tour agenda, outside of the allotted canoe time? If not, perhaps there’s a way to reach the castle some way other than by paddling. It was an enjoyable, historically worthwhile castle visit.

We did this tour last May and there was an alternative choice for those who did not want to canoe. It was pouring rain when it came time for the canoe ride, but the guide was able to pivot and had an alternative activity for the whole group.

We did that for in 2019, and the people that didn't do the canoe did a boat ride instead.

I did the tour in 2022. Three of us opted out of canoeing. Our guide arranged a tour boat ride for us.
