Can't Find Aix-En-Provence in France or Best of France Guidebooks

Hi there,

This town and area are included in the Rick Steves 14-day Eastern France tour itinerary, but I cannot find any information in the guidebooks. Also looking for info on Les Milles. Any advice? I am planning to (mostly) mimic the tour on my own.

Thank you!

Peter

When we took that tour it ended in Aix-en-Provence. RS doesn't cover all places in his guidebooks, for example Bordeaux, which is one of our favorite cities in France. You may want to check the library for other guidebooks that cover Aix.

There is a RS Provence guide book. I'm sure that has lots of information about Aix.

I have the 13th edition RS Provence book and it has 18 pages on Aix-en-Provence. I don’t see les milles listed in the index.

I don’t see les milles listed in any of the France books that I have. Your best bet will probably be the internet.

Good luck with the trip planning!

Fodor’s, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guide guidebooks for France each have six to eight pages on Aix, nothing on Les Milles.

The Camp des Milles? It's very interesting and accessible by bus from somewhere near the center of town--or was in 2017. I think the bus may not run super frequently, so check the schedule carefully in both directions ahead of time.

The camp is a well-documented memorial/museum now, with virtually all the info translated into English. I didn't have quite enough time to absorb everything without rushing, so I'd recommend not making this the last stop of the day. On a revisit I'd allow at least 3 hours (I'm slow in museums).

I don't think there's any food in the immediate area--maybe a soda machine at the museum, so plan ahead.

The lower level of the museum was quite chilly even on a hot summer day, and you're not down there for just a few minutes. I'd recommend carrying a warm layer with you.
