I'm trying to work out hiking plans. It sounds like the hotel is on the valley floor in Lauterbrunnen. But hotel lists aren't available until a month before. Has anyone been on this tour?
I can’t help with tour questions, but forum member shoe put together a great guide to all the walks/hikes in the area. You can find that here:
The BOE in 21 days plus other RS tours has taken me to the Lauterbrunnen Valley and surrounding area. Just about everything in the valley and surrounding mountain are easily connectable by bus, lifts, trains, trails, etc. Mürren and beyond as well as Wengen and above can be reached very quickly. Reservations are not needed for transport. For the most part you can count on getting where you need to within minutes; a little longer if you’re going high into the mountains.
During the RS GAS tour (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), we stayed at a hotel in Lauterbrunnen, and our guide asked everyone when we arrived if we wanted to pay for the gondola lift at Wengen to do the Mannlichen hike the next morning to Kleine Scheidegg and short train back down to Lauterbrunnen. It’s a gorgeous mostly level hike with views of Jungfrau.
You also could take the gondola on the opposite side up to Schilthorn. Our guide gave us all of the information during the bus ride to Lauterbrunnen. The two of us also went through the Trümmelbach Falls which was an easy walk from Lauterbrunnen to walk through the falls which are inside the mountain.
The area is amazing! We have been back during a subsequent independent trip and stayed in Wengen that time. Everything is very accessible by short trains up the mountain or gondolas.
Hi, I also see this is your first trip. Try to stay a couple of days after the tour in Paris, if possible. There is so much to enjoy in Paris, and you will feel confident after being there with the tour to enjoy a few more days.
When we did the Alpine tour several years ago, we stayed at Hotel Oberland. We knew that was going to be a favorite area, so when the tour ended, we backtracked to Murren for several more days. A hike we did multiple times was from Murren to Grutschalp with a stop at the Winteregg restaurant along the way.
Thanks.
Jean, won't be staying in Paris after the tour, as I know I'll be in France again. I'm getting a train to Amsterdam and spending three nights in Haarlem before coming home
When we took BOE14 (2015) the tour stayed two nights at Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen. I believe the hotel has changed hands since then, but may still be the go-to lodging for this itinerary. It's centrally located in town and enables easy access to whichever side of the valley appeals to you. Our guide arranged a morning run up to Schilthorn/PizGloria (four gondola connections) for breakfast, with a hike to follow starting in Mürren [halfway back down the mountain]. A few others on the tour ventured over to Wengen and the north face trail. Staying in Lauterbrunnen provides lots of options; and if you're there on a Friday Night, the bell-ringing parade walks right by the hotel on their way up the street.
Matt, your bell ringing comment reminded me of the church bells that ring Sunday morning. They have such a beautiful sound echoing in the mountains & valley!
I was on the BOE 14 Day in 2019. Great tour!
In Lauterbrunnen on the morning of our free day, our guide organized an optional trip to the Schilthorn, which we did (at our own expense, but I think she got us a less expensive group rate). After we were done at the top, we were free to get back to the hotel however we chose, and the guide advised us in the various options of gondola, trains, or hiking. People were free to spend the day however they wished, and it was easy to get around.
And yes, the hotel was on the valley floor, but I can’t remember the name. Very nice though, with balconies:)
The exact hotel won't be much of a factor. You can walk the length of Lauterbrunnen in about 5 minutes.
As for hikes, my 3 favorites are, in order: Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, Grutschalp to Murren, and First to Bachalpsee. Shoe
Hi shoe, I hope you don’t mind, but I frequently provide the link to your BO hiking guide. 😊 It is such a great resource, I want to make sure everyone is aware of it.
