Best way to handle airport arrival in a big city?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be arriving in a large city after a long international flight and I’m trying to plan ahead a little better this time.

In your experience, what’s the best way to handle airport arrival in a big city? Do you usually rely on taxis, public transportation, ride-share apps, or pre-booked transfers?

I’m especially curious about reliability if a flight is delayed or arrives late at night. I’ve had mixed experiences in the past with long taxi lines and surge pricing, so I’m wondering what tends to work most smoothly.

Would appreciate hearing what experienced travelers here prefer and why.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Not all airports in a big city are created equal. So what works best depends on the airport and where you need to get to from that particular airport.

Unless of course this question is what I think it is….

After a transatlantic flight arriving in a new city I like a pre-booked car and driver. In some cities, Rome and Athens, for example, this is not much more than a regular taxi. Other times I have used public transport, just depends on if I am familiar with the transportation system.

I take any trains or trams possible into the city - Paris, Vienna, Rome, Milan, London, etc. Why? Easy, reliable & they aren’t dependent on traffic.
