Best of South of Italy tour: AC?

Has anyone taken this tour? I wonder if all hotels have AC in case we go early September.

You should check with Rick Steves tours because they don’t always use the same hotels on their tours and we were told that there are set seasonal dates on when the Italian hotels turn the A/C on and when it won’t be turned on. We did this tour in late April of 2022 and I remember that the hotel in Matera had not turned on their air conditioning yet nor had the hotel in Naples so both those rooms were a bit warm because the weather had turned warm. Sounds strange but it’s a different culture. I also believe there is a general comment on the RS tour page that states hotels may not have air conditioning. But again, shoot R S tours an email or call, they’re always very helpful.

I did the S. of Italy tour at the end of Sept. last year. I don't do well in heat, but was comfortable at night in all the hotels. Some had fans rather than AC, but that was fine.

Although the temps. were reasonable, in the high 70s, it was more humid than expected and being out and about all day wore me out. I really enjoyed all the places we went, though!

Also, some hotels had AC only in some rooms, as I discovered when discussing rooms with other people. I don't recall anybody being unhappy either way.

I took the South of Italy tour in May 2019. It was an extremely cold spring, even the locals were complaining. I don’t handle cold so had to turn the heat on in the hotel rooms. When I couldn’t, I used every blanket available. I’m sure some of the hotels had a/c but I don’t remember using it.

One thing to realize is that what Americans consider normal AC isn't necessarily normal in Italy. We were on a different tour. At our first hotel the AC only worked when we were in the room with the keycard inserted in a slot. When we returned to our room after housekeeping had been there, the windows were open. The room never got as cool as we prefer it.

My common garb was a sleeveless dress. I carried a denim jacket and figured I'd wear that anywhere I got too cold or when I went in churches or anywhere they wanted my shoulders covered. This would never be a a problem in US air conditioning. but it was in Italy in June.

Our second hotel was at a higher elevation and the natural AC (open window) worked well but the electric version not so much so. We said the other two hotels had "American AC".
