Best of Scotland Tour

Hi,

We will arrive in Scotland a few days before the tour starts and will be staying in Edinburgh. The RS guidebook has a walking tour of the New Town which looks good but does the tour do the same walking tour? I would hate to do it twice. Also, we have been to Edinburgh before and are quite familiar with the Royal Mile and have done a guided walk there. Should we skip that and spend our time elsewhere? Also, we are thinking of going to the Witchery Restaurant for dinner or one of the finer dining establishments. As we will be on the RS tour, we will be packing casual attire. Do we need something a little dressier? Thanks.

Have you been out to the HMS Britannia in Leith? We enjoyed touring the ship and having lunch there. Have you been inside the Palace of Holyrood and taken the tour there? or taken a guided tour of the garden? Or spent anytime in the National Museum of Scotland? Or take a walk up to Calton Hill to see the sites and view from up there?
We had dinner in the restaurant at the top of the National Museum of Scotland. Reservations required. It was fancy, but not that dressy. (Edit: May not be there anymore due to Covid)
When are you going? If you are there in August, go to some of the Fringe Festival shows.
One of our most memorable events was the evening Literary Pub tour- a drama between guides/actors with scenes done at different pubs in Old town. But you do this event for the drama and your interest in Scottish Writers-not for the drinking.

The walk of New Town on the tour just walks down George street. (or some other parallel street) The guide just points out a couple of buildings and tells the history. The walk ends at the restaurant where you will get acquainted with the other members of the group and you will choose your bus buddy.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. We are doing the 13 day tour which actually starts in Glasgow and ends in Edinburgh. We will be there in mid August. We spent three days in Edinburgh a few years back during the Fringe Festival and also went to the military tattoo which we have tickets for again. We have been to Holyrood and the gardens and done the Royal Mile both on our own and with a private guide so there’s not much we missed on that. We even taught the guide a few things thanks to the RS guidebook. LOL! Our plan this time is to go to the National Museum and the National Gallery and Carlton Hill which we missed on our last visit. We will probably also visit Edinburgh Castle again. We plan to go to Dean Village, the Vennel, Victoria Street and Circus Lane as we are photographers. The literary walk looks good. I will put that on my list of things to do. The Tower Restaurant at the National Museum is sadly closed for good.

I 2nd the suggestion of touring the HMS Britannia. I loved it. I would also suggest you check out a Rabbie's Day Tour. I went on the one to Melrose Abbey and Rosslyn. You are in a large van, so a smaller group. Their office also has a wonderful cafe, so you can arrive early and have a 'cuppa' and scone or other pastry prior to your tour. I enjoyed it so much when we got back from our lovely day I purchased one of their homemade sandwiches for my dinner/tea.

Hi Marna,

Yes, we booked our tattoo tickets back in February. This will be our second time attending this special event. It is not to be missed. I hope the RAF does a flyover at the beginning of the show as they did when we last attended the tattoo. I will be listening for the low rumble in the distance and have my camera ready to hopefully capture that.
