Best of Eastern France — post tour

Hello,
We hope to do the Best of Eastern France tour in Spring 2026. I am seeking suggestions on time/cost efficient places to travel after the tour, which ends in Aix-en-Provence. We could probably spend an additional week or so in Europe. Perhaps those who have done the tour have recommendations?
Many thanks.

You could take the train to Nice and that area or the high speed train back to Paris, lots of options depending on your interests. We went home after tour because we had already been to Nice. Have a great time, its a wonderful tour.

Hi Mary Lou,

You could easily spend an extra day or two in Aix, doing a day trip to Marseille by train for the day, then do as Margie suggested and take the train to the French Riviera for several days, staying in Nice, Villefranche-Sur-Mer or Antibes. You could then take the train or fly back to Paris to fly home.

When we took the Eastern France tour it ended in Marseille. We took the train to Arles and really enjoyed it. Our tour leader took the high speed train back to Paris as she had that day and the next until her next tour started.
We did this in the fall and seemed to hit the wine harvest from north to south. It is one of my very favorite tours.

We spent several extra days in Aix, and had a wonderful time. We then took the train to Paris, and flew home from there.

The Best of EF was my first RS tour experience and loved every bit of it! I'm a fan of Rhone wines and felt I had truly 'arrived' when sipping a nice red from the region it came from. I added 3 days post tour and took a train to Lyon "the gastronomic capital of the world" and had some amazing meals. It is the second largest city in France and has a variety of things to do there. If I remember it was a two-hour high-speed train to CDG.
You will have a wonderful time!

I'd suggest that it really depends on where you're flying back from. If you go through Frankfurt you have options that would be very different than if you go out of Zurich or Paris. It's also going to be a question of moving frequently or staying in just one or two places for 3-4 days at a time.

In April I have two weeks planned in the area your tour will cover, specifically Dijon, Lyon, Province. My plan is to swing back north on an even further east route through either a Geneva-Basel route or a Turin-Basel line. But you could just as easily stay in France and go west through Montpelier, Toulouse, and then north. Or you could back track and visit Metz and Nancy, which are worth seeing.

Whatever you choose, you're going to love Le Grand Est.

After the tour we stayed an extra night in Aix, then we took a high speed train to Barcelona (four hours). I was able to get better flight options out of Barcelona than I was anywhere in France during the time we were traveling.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
We will make a final decision once we see the flight options. Right now, I am leaning toward visiting more of France. (Just finished reading a ML Longworth series set in Aix-en-Provence and eager to see that part of the country.)
Cheers!

We took the EF tour in June/July 2015. The tour ended in Marseille. This is a wonderful tour. At the end of the tour we rented a car and spent two weeks exploring more of southern France/Provence. I would do it again in a heartbeat. You will have a wonderful time.
