Best of Adriatic time in Plitvice?

We are going on our first RS tours, the best of Adriatic in May. My hubby's main concern is having enough time for photos at Plitvice, it is the highlight for him. I've read that the tour starts early but wondering how much time we will have there? Does the tour stop for lunch inside the park and maybe he can skip lunch and continue clicking away? The other thought is if we arrive at the hotel early enough the previous day he might be able to pay for an extra admission that day? Did anyone keep notes of what you did there?

I believe the guides have options about how they deal with the logistics of getting the group on and off the park trails efficiently and how long they allocate. Some of it probably depends on whether the little shuttle boats are running, the weather, lunch plans on site or off... with that disclaimer, Our experience from 2024,, Once you enter from the entrance que(short walk from the hotel) you are on a trail/path that meanders the property. Relatively narrow and defined. Its self paced, no tour, though the guide is trying to keep an eye on the group as it approaches some boats that can drop you down trail for the second half of the hike. This is a decision point for those that have seen enough and want to return to the hotel and wait, or continue the trail from the opposite direction. That second half is maybe narrower and becomes crowded as groups will have started from the other entrance and converge at some point. There was no stopping for lunch, once everyone is back to the hotel, the bus departs. You will have checked out and loaded the bus that morning before the hike, Total hike time might have been 3-4 hours, don't quote me. Plenty of time for pictures around every corner. It can be a little intense as again, relatively narrow at times and everyone is stopping for the photos, but totally worth it. Looks like ticket sales close at 1pm and the trail entrances close at 5 so not thinking you are going to access the trails the day of arrival but you can always chat with your guide. Perhaps you can just wander the hotel property(you are in the park) for photography.
Enjoy.

I think park hours vary seasonally, and I'd be surprised if you couldn't, somehow, get into the park after 1 PM. We've often recommended that people start visiting the part mid- or late-afternoon to avoid the worst of the daytripping crowds, and no one has ever said, "Wait--you can't enter the park after 1 PM."

There's some information on this webpage and an email address to which you could send an inquiry:

I haven't been to Plitvice since 2015, and in any case I know procedures have changed since then.

Hi Jenn - We were there last fall. I'm sure schedules vary depending on tour directors, but for us, we arrived at Plitvice around 5:30pm. We then dined buffet style with the group at the park. The next morning we loaded our luggage onto the bus at 7:45am and took the very first tram. That tram dropped us off at the trail where the majority of people end their hike. It was amazing. We essentially had the trails to ourselves (and our group) for the majority of the hike by hiking it in reverse. Once on the trails our group spread out and everyone traveled at their own pace. Near the end you start seeing people coming your direction, and soon after it was packed, but that was only for a very short distance at the end for us.

To answer your question, at least with our schedule, you would not have been able to enter the park the day prior. But we felt like we had plenty of time on the trails to stop, take photos, and just take in the scenery. There was a spot after the little boat ride to get snacks, and then a food place at the very end of our hike. Nothing special with the food, so I'd say if he's worried about time in the park, pack some snacks and you can skip wasting time at the food stop and spend more time on the trails. It was really an amazing day - one of my fondest memories of the trip. Enjoy!

Thank you! If everyone else stops for a snack or lunch that may work for him. I need to look up what areas he will most want to see. Can I assume that we go as soon as the park opens not there isn't time to just go earlier than the group?

We went there on the RS tour in September of 2024 and our guide used the same starting point as Lisuza's group. We could go at the pace we wanted, but we were told to stop and wait for everyone at the snack/restroom area. Unfortunately, a tour member was lost on the first leg and we ended waiting a long time before they were found. Most of us ate lunch during the wait. When we got back on the trail, it was very crowded in both directions. I think the best picture taking was on the second leg, so maybe he can work out something with the guide to be able to go ahead instead of stopping at the snack area to regroup. We were told to skip the the path to Veliki Slap because the view is just as good from afar (and it was nice from the trail going to the top of the hill). I'm guessing that was because we were running late, though.

May 2025 for our visit on the RS tour. We arrived around 6:00 p.m.and our guide, Marijan, hot-footed it to pick up the tickets. We followed the same pattern as other tours I.e. taking the first bus to the top (#3) and then walking back to Entrance #1. We were free to walk at our own pace and Marijan kept doubling back and around to keep track of everyone. By this time on the tour we had bonded pretty well as group so we kind of kept track of each other. Stopping for lunch or snack was on our own time and we had plenty of time but you could easily skip it. We didn’t reconnect as a group until we were back at Entrance #1. Meet up time was 1:00 p.m. Following the direction we took, your husband should be able to capture lots of photos free of people. Looking at the time stamp on my photos, there are some pretty spectacular ones before we hit #2.

I sure hope that is our experience that we start as early as possible and then meet up at 1pm, that would give us time : )

It is interesting that his guidebook suggests starting at entrance #1 and the tour ends at entrance #1. Who knows!

Anyway, sounds like plenty of photo options.
