Best flights to Poland tour

Hi, My husband and I are signed up for the Best of Poland Tour July 2025.. I am looking at multi city flights to Gdansk and return out of Krakow. Is there a better flight plan? We would like to extend our trip a few days to visit Auschwitz and other points of interest. Thanks for your recommendations!

You could return from Warsaw. There might be better options from there, rather than Krakow. There are probably 8-10 trains daily from Krakow to Warsaw if you wish to pursue that option.

Hi, Marcia.

I too am on one of the RS Best of Poland July trips. Here’s my plans.

Flying from JFK (I live in upstate NY, easy Amtrak down to the City), non-stop to Frankfurt on Sunday, connecting flight to Gdańsk. Then getting to Gdansk late afternoon on Monday. All on Lufthansa. Arriving in Gdansk on the day prior to the tour. I have booked the earlier arrival at tour hotel. After the tour ends “after breakfast” on Thursday in Krakow, I have arranged a day trip to Auschwitz. Staying that night in Krakow, at same hotel as the tour. Leaving by train Friday morning to Wroclaw, about three hours away by a direct train. There til Monday morning, and then taking the direct train into Warsaw. Overnight there and then home from Warsaw on Tuesday, non-stop to JFK on LOT. Flying out of Warsaw avoids a connection somewhere in Europe. Back to the US by late afternoon in time for the train to upstate.

Thus, that gives me an extra day in Gdansk at the start, the extra day in Krakow, and then two and a half days in Wroclaw, said to be a lovely city. And into Warsaw in the afternoon, so an evening there. A final pierogi? My flight home on Tuesday is at 12:45, so a leisurely morning. Airport is very close to downtown Warsaw.

I suggest looking at how you can fly direct from your home airport to anywhere in Europe and then connect by train or separate plane ticket, rather than trying to make one ticket work. The other poster who flies out of JFK has the advantage of daily non-stops to virtually any city in Europe. Those of us in smaller markets have a harder time. So get yourself over the water first and sort the rest out from there. "Better" is very subjective, BTW. To me, fewer connections is better. Shorter flights and more legroom are better. Paying with my saved miles is better.

I agree with G3rryCee. For us (we did the Poland tour last summer) the easiest was on Delta/KLM through Amsterdam each way, but a lot of it will depend on your home airport, your travel style, etc. For what it's worth, we spent one extra day in Gdasnk and 2 in Krakow, and it was definitely time well spent.

There is also Katowice Airport close to Krakow which is also well connected. I'll often fly in to Katowice instead of Krakow due to connections.

Thank you, I appreciate all the options! I'm all about minimal stops. Ill be investigating Warsaw, Berlin, and Katowice. Since we're in SC our options are DC, NY or possible Atlanta.

You are in Europe. You paid $1500 to $6000 rt for the flight .. what's better is to spread the ticket costs across as many days as possible. Took you 16 hours to get to Poland, so what if your next stop is 4 hours and $175 away? Pursue your interests where ever they are.

Lufthansa flies non-stop from Charlotte to Munich, with good connections for both Gdansk and Krakow. So one stop in each direction, once you get to Charlotte.

If for some reason flying in or out of Warsaw results in a better itinerary, note that the Polish high-speed trains between Warsaw and your two cities are fast, comfortable, and a great value.
