My wife and I are very excited to be going on our first RS Tour (Best of Europe in 14 days - in May). Is there any chance that our tour bus will have phone charging ports available?
No way to predict that ahead of time, RS uses a variety of local companies for busses and each has different amenities depending on the company and driver. Of 5 RS tours I've only had access to euro style plug ins once (no USB), and that was in Turkey in 2023. Best to plan on not having them (bring a portable charger) and be pleasantly surprised if your bus has them. Here's a relatively recent discussion on the topic https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/tours/rs-buses
I agree, definitely bring a power bank. Even if the bus has ports it doesn’t mean the ones where you are seated will work. You will move around on the bus so it may be a cr*p shoot. On the last tour I was on, a tour member needed to plug in a chiller bag for medication. She had to sit in the same seat the whole trip as she’d found one that worked. I hope she brought a power bank next time.
You will have a wonderful time on this tour!
We had charging ports on all 3 of our RS tours, but honestly they were so low and kind of hidden that it took me quite some time to figure that out. They use local charter buses, so there's no way of knowing what you'll get. I think most frequently the report is that the buses don't usually have them.
Have a great time on your tour. I know you are really going to enjoy it! If you have time, come back to the forum and post a trip report afterwards. We love to hear how people's trips went and usually learn something new about the destinations.
Thank you for the responses. We'll be sure to get a charging bank and hopefully spend more time conversing and looking out the window than looking at our phones.
We just got back from the Belgium/Holland tour. Our bus had USB ports in the panel above our heads. They worked fine the couple of times I used them but I saw at least one person who seemed to be having trouble. As others have said, buses may differ.
There were USB charging ports on our bus in 2024 on the 14 days best of Ireland.
Just got back. We had Wi-Fi in Greece but no charging ports. We had charging ports but no Wi-Fi in Turkey.
Over the years I’d say that both Wi-Fi and charging ports are becoming more common but not guaranteed. I bring a small battery backup though the overnight charge is usually enough unless using maps a lot.
The bus we had on our Heart of Portugal tour that started March 31 had USB ports on it, but they didn’t work. Other than that, it was a great trip. Loved Portugal. And our guide RRRafael was great!
