Hello Forum!
Does anyone have a recommendation for a tour or touring company in Salzburg. My wife and I are going in December. We would like to get a half-day tour of the city and would like the name of a reputable company or guide. Thanks!

we did a Panoramic Sound of Music tour and we were pleased with it. There are places city center that they sort of point out, but you'd have to look and view them on your own since they can't get the vehicle in there. I would bring a copy of RS walking tour for Salzburg.
We also did the Panoramia SOM Tour 1A during the winter (late January). During the "off season" Panorama used a minivan (in place of the large summer busses). The minivan allowed our driver/guide to enter the street next to the Abby that normally would not be accessed with a large bus. It's a 4 hour tour that includes a drive out to the countryside. The Salzberg portion of the tour only covers SOM venues.
Salzberg "old town" is very compact and you could certainly self-guide with the help of a RS Salzburg guide book or similar. You can also download RS's "Listen" audio tour and "Town Walk" map of Salzberg: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/austria/salzburg
If you are SOM fans, I would make a list of in town movie sites and plot on the map--cemetary, mirabel gardens, river, etc. There is a scene with horse murals and a big trough that horses used to drink at. That is easily found, can't remember the name.
SOM tours are fun if you're a fan of the movie. Otherwise, barring mobility issues, Old Salzburg is a very walkable small city on your own, and the guidebook covers it well. If you're there in December, you'll want to allow time at one of the Christmas markets. We used to go every year, and enjoyed wandering around the one by the Cathedral in the evening, sipping hot gluhwein.
Two years ago in December I did a walking tour organized by the Tourist Info in Salzburg. Lasted about 2 hours, had about a dozen visitors, and cost about 10 euro. It was organized to cover the different platz in the old pedestrian city. The guide was knowledgeable and spoke perfect English. I thought we got a fine overview of the old city and her history. The tour left in late morning, and I think it occurred most days of the week. No need to book ahead. Just show up, but be sure it's happening that day.
