Airport connections last day of Tour - is it okay to miss breakfast?

Hi,

I will be one of the upcoming Munich / Salzburg / Vienna tours. On the last day of the tour, only breakfast is listed as the activity of the day.

We have airport connections, and I am worried about getting to the airport on time. Is it okay to miss breakfast with the tour group? Is that considered poor form?

I live in Orlando, and they recommend three hours check in prior to international flights, but maybe in Vienna, they do not have the same type of check in recommendation? Maybe we can have a quick bite with the group and then run off to the airport?

Thanks,
Melody

for your flight home you should be at the airport 3 hours ahead. What time is your flight?

Many people will leave after the farewell dinner, others will miss the final group breakfast.

Say your farewells at the farewell dinner if you need to be off early - you won't be alone.

Three hours ahead is the typical suggested time allowance for a transatlantic flight. I Google airport check-in time for my specific airline and departure airport, because there is occasional variation. There can be situational modifications as well. My travel mate flew home from Venice (a much smaller airport) last month on the day before a strike that was going to have some effect at airports. She received an email from her airline a couple of days before the flight, asking her to show up 3-1/2 hours early.

The question about skipping breakfast has come up before, and the answer has always been that it is fine; many people need to do it, and it's the last night dinner where folks say their goodbyes. I trust some folks who've actually taken an RS tour (which I have not) will confirm that.

During the tour, people eat breakfast at their own time, within the serving window of the hotel. So it’s not really a group meal. The big send-off would be the last dinner. I wouldn’t be concerned about missing the last day breakfast. More important to get to the airport on time!

Sometimes the hotel will pack a brown bag breakfast for you to take. Have a wonderful time.

Since there are no direct flights from Vienna to Orlando, you are changing planes somewhere. If your first flight is to another European country, then it is absolutely unnecessary to arrive three hours early. Two hours is plenty of time, especially as Vienna is a very efficient airport and especially if you check in online.

Breakfast is not really a “group” activity on tours. Each day, the hotel offers breakfast during a window of time, say 6:30-9:30 or 7:00-10:00, and tour members go whenever it’s convenient for them.

It’s not at all unusual for some tour members to leave the tour very early in the morning. The guide often helps people organize shared rides to the airport or train station. Two hours before the flight is enough if the first leg is “domestic,” that is, within Europe.

Breakfast on the last day is always odd. Many people will miss it because they are on their way to the airport. Others are staying for a day or two and end up eating a leisurely meal as various tour members drift in and out. As others have said, the farewell dinner is the much bigger deal and the last formal tour activity.

Thank you for all the prompt and quick replies. This makes me feel so much better (and not as awkward) to say farewells during the final dinner. I appreciate all the help!

Sincerely,
Melody

Everyone is on their own agenda on that last day and heading in all directions. As mentioned breakfast isn’t a group meal anyway. You eat anytime within a specific timeframe. The night before our Munich, Salzburg, Vienna tour ended our guide made arrangements for taxi’s for the next morning for those heading home. You are going to love the tour! And that airport in Vienna is very nice!
PS. There’s nothing to feel awkward about on a Rick Steves’ tour. Sometimes people have to bow out of things for all sorts of reasons. You just let your guide know if you are skipping an activity or group meal. (Though skipping breakfasts isn’t something that anyone needs to be notified about.)

Of the four RS tours I have taken, I have only been able to have breakfast the last morning for one of the tours. We lived near Seattle, so we usually had very early flights. The one last-day breakfast was typical of the tour breakfasts where everyone wasn’t there at the same time. Definitely the final dinner is the farewell and celebration together!

One of the last tour hotels gave the people leaving early a sack breakfast- a muffin, apple & juice.
