After Eastern Europe Tour

Hi, we are planning to do a RS Eastern Europe tour in September 2020. The tour ends in Bled and we are kicking around ideas for where to spend another week after the tour. One option would be take the train to Salzburg for a few days then to Munich to fly home. We are also thinking about Switzerland or France. We’ve done several RS tours and some independent travel in Europe. We plan to travel by train/bus. Any ideas?

When we did this tour we got a ride from Lake Bled into Ljubljana and then took a short van ride to Venice. We had not been to Venice and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

After this tour, I took the train from Lecce Bled to Salzburg for two nights, then the train to Munich and flight home. Several in my group went on to Vienna. In hindsight, I should have stayed slightly longer in Salzburg (I wanted, but did not take, the cheesy Sound of Music tour) and added at least one more night in Munich (I was only there for 14 hours). Regardless, I felt like these two cities were in the same vein as the tour overall - it would have been a little weird to move on to Ireland, for example. Maybe do some searches for airfares for return cities that pair well with a Prague arrival - I primarily chose Salzburg/Munich because of flights (Munich is a hub for the airline I use regularly).

You might consider staying an extra night in Bled before heading onward. It's a great place to unwind for a day after a busy tour. I like the suggestion to divide your extra week between Salzburg and Munich. Both places have a lot to do and see, and flight options back from Munich should be very good. I'd allot more time to Munich than Salzburg because of its good side trip options.

Donna, we just did this tour in September 2019. LOVED it! It is a very busy tour with lots of walking, but also lots of time on the bus.

We did exactly what you are planning to do. Took the train from Lake Bled (got a taxi to the station) to Salzburg and spent three nights there. One day there we took a tour into the alps. Then we took the train back to Munich for our flight home. Since we had been in Munich before and this was at the end of being gone for three weeks, we didn't stay in Munich. We took the morning train from Salzburg to Munich train station and then hopped on the S-bahn out to the airport. It was all very easy, after we did a lot of reading here and on www.61.com.

I agree that another night in Lake Bled would have been nice.

naalehuretiree, please tell me more about your day in the Alps. Which tour company did you use? Where did you go? Did you have time to do any hiking? Sounds like a great day trip. Appreciate any additional info. Thank you!

Donna, I'll send you a private message. We weren't totally pleased with our tour guide.

Has anyone considered returning to Budapest? I noticed that there is free time for both Pest and Buda. Are there locations within the cities that were of interest and not included in the tours? Thanks

Patrica SF We did the Best of Eastern Europe tour a few years ago and a couple extra days in Budapest would have been wonderful. we opted for a few days in Vienna. This year we a going back to Budapest in conjunction with Istanbul to finish seeing Budapest and surrounding sights.

Thank you Mike. Were there specific locations in Buda or Pest that should be considered? Both my husband and I enjoy museums and unusual venues. We also truly enjoy capturing photos.

I also took, and loved this tour. I would recommend one of two options. The first would be to continue down the Adriatic coast line -- look at the "Best Of the Adriatic Coast" tour offered by RS for a rough idea. The other would to be head over to Italy -- maybe Naples area, not all that far from Rome --and about 100 other choices. Let us know -- I would be curious what you decide. Love that part of the world.

I will be going on this tour in May with a friend. We're taking the train from Ljubljana through the Alps to Munich. The train ride is supposed to be a destination in itself. We will then fly from Munich through London and then back home.
