Aeolian Islands + Italy/Sicily

Advice?? Trying to incorporate Aeolian Islands either before or after R.S. group tour to Sicily which starts in Palermo, ends in Catania, departing airport Seattle. Fly into Naples? from there, what?? train to port of Milazzo or go to Catania & train to port of Milazzo for ferry....?? Will not have a car. Appreciate input if you've already done logistical planning. Thanks! Paula

The train trip to Sicily from Naples would be rather Iong. You can check the schedule on www.trenitalia.com. I most definitely do not recommend the night train. You could fly into either Catania (more flights) or Palermo and get to Milazzo by train.

I haven't been to the Aeolian Islands, so I don't know anything about the transportation options. I believe at least a couple folks have posted about going there. You should be able to find those posts by searching for words like Aeolian, Lipari and the names of the other major islands in the group.

I would fly directly to Sicily, changing in Rome. Naples isn't convenient. I don't remember the logistics but it was a very short ferry ride to Lipari, about 20 minutes. I'd go after the tour once you are familiar with the island. You'll be able to get all the info you need during the tour.
