Adriatic Tour — getting home from Dubrovnik

I’m slated to be on the Adriatic Tour in late April. I had a Google flight alert set for what I’d planned to be my flights there and back. Getting to Ljubljana seems easy enough, but not getting home from Dubrovnik. The Swiss flights that was one stop (Zurich) between Dubrovnik and Boston is suddenly gone. All I seem to be left with is either a 6 am departure from Dubrovnik with two stops en route or slightly later but taking 31+ hours (including an overnight). How are others navigating back to the US after this tour? Are the RS folks helpful in advising on this routing? I’m a pretty seasoned traveler and am flummoxed by this!

TIA for any thoughts.

When I took this tour many years ago, I flew Lufthansa. I don't remember my flight from Dubrovnik being extremely early in the day. On a random day in April, I see 11am-ish flights from Dubrovnik to Boston with layover in Munich on Lufthansa and similar flight with Air France with layover in Paris.

Check flying out a day or two after the tour; there might be other flights available that only operate certain days of the week. When I took this tour (15 years ago), it was challenging to find good flight options. Staying 2 extra days got me a flight with one connection rather than two. I did have an early morning departure.

Another option you might check into is to buy a one-way ticket from Dubrovnik to another city in Europe, spend a night or two there, and then take your transatlantic flight home. For example, I often end my trips in London. I fly on a discount airline to London, spend a couple of days there and enjoy the city, and then fly home.

Use the Dubrovnik airport wiki to see what cities you can get to from Dubrovnik.

Also wanted to add that many flights to Dubrovnik are seasonal. You will have limited choices since you are traveling in April.

Hi Amy, I did an Easy Jet from Dubrovnik to Amsterdam, stayed overnight at nearby Leiden, and took Delta home from there. I really enjoyed having a day to explore Leiden! It’s an easy short train ride from Schiphol to Leiden.

Hi Amy,
I am booked on this trip for September. For my return flight home to San Francisco I have booked a British Airways flight from Dubrovnik to London Heathrow, departs at 1:05 pm, arrives at 3:00 pm. I'm staying overnight at the Sofitel in the terminal at Heathrow and flying back to SFO the following day. It was too difficult trying to get flights to work all on the same day.
Good luck. Looking forward to this trip!

I took a British Airways flight to LHR and spent two nights and three days enjoying the town of Windsor. Then I boarded my Delta flight home.

Thank you all…I should mention I don’t have the luxury of any more time off, so this could be a dealbreaker. I’m only allowed 10 business days off work at once, and I have a Monday holiday in the mix, so here we are.

I will look for the Lufthansa and Air France flights Mary sees. (My departure day is 4/29, a Monday). I haven’t come across those at all on my searches (and oddly a friend of mine in DC sees those too, though I don’t!). Thank you for that tip!

I picked April 13 as your flight date from BOS to LJU. I see a Turkish Airways flight that leaves Boston at 10:10 pm, a little over 3 hour layover in Istanbul and arrives in Ljubljana at 7:20 pm on April 14. On the return, I picked April 29, with Turkish Airways flight that leaves Dubrovnik at 9:05 am, with almost 4 hours layover in Istanbul, arriving in Boston at 7:20 pm. $913 USD.

We took this tour a number of years ago in September on Lufthansa. We returned from Dubrovnik in the evening and stayed over at the Hilton Garden in the Frankfurt Airport and returned to Boston the next day at noon. Checking Lufthansa for a multi-city trip, it lists three, one stop return flights from Dubrovnik. Two are at 07:25 and one departs at 13:10 through Zurich, landing in Boston at 8:_ _pm. The duration of this one is almost 13 hours with a 2:45 layover in Zurich.

Mary, I was leaning toward Turkish once i saw that. I actually like that airline!

Don, this is absolutely crazy but I am not seeing those one stops on Lufthansa no matter where I search, LH site, Google flights, Skyscanner, ITA Software matrix. I would love those if I could only find them!

Thank you all for looking!

Check additional search engines like Skyscanner - sometimes they'll have flight options Google doesn't show and Consider flying into a hub city in Europe like Frankfurt or Munich instead of directly back to the US. Often there are more routing options that way. Air travel is notoriously unpredictable these days. With some flexibility and searching across different search tools though, hoping you're able to piece together good return routing before your trip!

Amy,

I was looking up 4/29/24 to Ljubljana and a 5/13/24 return from Dubrovnik on Lufthansa using the multi-city choice. I've just gone back and as you noticed, there are no return flights available. In addition there are now no flights listed to depart from Boston to Ljubljana either. Earlier there were five to six, one and two stop flights available on both legs.
