Does anyone know if its feasible ( and worth it) to take a day trip to Pisa from Volterra? With the time it takes the train or bus would we be able to enjoy a short visit there? Don't want to be on a bus too much for one day.
We will be doing the Heart of Italy tour in June.
Thanks,
Julie
I would rather spend more time in Volterra.
Only via a private driver because the drive is an hour, but public transport appears to be at least double that. I also would not want to take away from the tour time in Volterra.
If you really want to see Pisa, why not do it before tour, or afterward.
Heart of Italy ends in Florence so you could visit then as suggested. I’ve done Heart of Italy and Best of Italy so have visited both Volterra and Pisa. I vote for seeing every thing in Volterra you can. To me it’s a far more interesting visit than Pisa which is overcrowded and a bit disappointing.
Other than The Tower, Pisa is not especially interesting. We were there a year ago.
Volterra is not on any train route and it's a little off the beaten path. I would prefer to spend more town at that hilltown.
As always, it depends on what interests you --- I loved the Camposanto, the baptistery, the cathedral, the sinopie museum, a few other churches and two other museums in Pisa, and also I thought it was fun to watch people trying to take their posed photos with the leaning tower. HOWEVER, it is our traveling rule-of-thumb that if you have to choose between a place that's harder to get to (like Volterra) and a place that will be easy to reach on a future trip (like Pisa), choose the one you might not be able to get to again and see that place more thoroughly. Volterra is lovely to walk around in.
Above post by info sent in for review. All his posts contain links that look exactly the same.
Looking at the tour itinerary, it looks like you only have one day to explore Volterra. Having been to both towns I would take the advice given here and try to visit Pisa before or after the tour if it’s high on your list to see. On one hand I’m glad I got to see Pisa because I’ve always wanted to see it. But we did not find it enjoyable because of the crowds, the endless tents of souvenir vendors, hawkers brazenly in your face trying to put bracelets on your wrists, the pickpockets continually brushing up against you and one of our tour members being pushed down by a trio of men demanding money as we walked along as a group. It was memorable.
Thank you for all the candid responses. Sounds like it's better to visit Pisa the next go around in Italy. Looking forward to exploring the beautiful town of Volterra.
Another vote for quality Volterra time. Incidentally, we completed this tour in 2019. If all the stars align, you might get a 15 second glimpse of the Pisa tower. Our bus did some backtracking and in the blink of an eye, our guide said quick, look to your left...into the distance way over there, see the tower...and sure enough on the horizon we could see the tower and it was indeed leaning. So hope springs external, you may see it at no extra charge. Have fun!
