I'm booked for RS 7 days in Paris from 4/26 to 5/2. The RS itinerary for this tour has listed Orsay Museum on May 1. I just discovered that May 1 is a holiday in France and the museums are not open. I have emailed RS tour company to find out what is going on this day. Has anyone been in Paris on May 1? What is open and are the main streets closed for parades?
I'm a first timer going to Paris and I'm trying to figure things out. I appreciate any input. Thank you.
You did the appropriate thing by contacting the tour office. I’m sure your tour guide will have things switched around and something else planned. They don’t leave you just hanging.
I've been on the Paris tour over a holiday period (New Year's). As noted above, the guide will rearrange the itinerary based on days particular museums are open/closed. The itinerary on the website includes what you will see but not necessarily the order in which you will see them. They won't shortchange your experience.
I've never been in Paris on May 1--I'm sure someone here will chime in on what the streets are like that day.
I agree that the schedule will be moved around to accommodate the May 1 closure of the Orsay. IF you don't hear back by email, give the office a call.
The area where there is generally a parade/demonstration is the route from Place de la Republique to Place de la Nation on the Right Bank.
Is your tour hotel the Londres Eiffel? If so that is a long way away. I've been in the Rue Cler area on May 1 and there were no demonstrations in the area. There were small little tables or kiosks set up along Rue Cler selling "Muguets" or Lilies of the Valley bouquets. I don't remember any issues with restaurants being closed. The Metro will run on a Sunday type schedule so less frequent but still running.
This is actually a good time to be on a Rick Steves tour. The guides are very adept at making changes!
