4 Days~ I Can't Believe It!

After a year and a half of saving and planning, after over half a year of counting down- it's almost here! I leave in 4 days for Amsterdam for my 21 BOE pre-tour days. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! The last month has just flown by, as my daughter announced her June wedding last month. So on top of getting all the last minute trip details taken care of, I've been planning the fastest wedding on record- since I won't get back until 3 weeks before the wedding. I've been so busy and stressed that I've hardly had the chance to breathe, much less focus on my trip. Now it's nearly here and I'm ready to relax and explore. I've got SKYPE loaded so I can keep in touch at home. I've got my website ready so I can share my journal and pictures with everybody who wants to follow along. I've got as much pre-planned as I possibly can. Now it's a matter of just letting it happen and enjoying it!

I'm most nervous about flying. I'm not a great flyer and I'm taking this trip solo. But once I land in Amsterdam, I intend to land ready to go! I have so many plans for my days there- if I get half of them done, I'll be in great shape! I can't even point to one thing I'm most looking forward to- as I'm so greedy I want to see and do it all!

Thanks to everybody for sharing their own travel adventures with me, for giving great advice and for sharing my excitement for this trip!

Lisa, I have enjoyed all our PM's the last couple months about your trip. Almost felt like I was packing and planning with you. Hope you have a wonderful and safe trip. I know how excited you must be. Just remember my last message.
A beer in Germany, wine in Italy, wine in France, with a picture of each for me to see on your site.

HAVE FUN!!

Lisa, I am so excited for you! Like Theresa I am hoping for completely uneventful flights, plus gorgeous weather, great food, an ~awesome~ Rick Steves' guide, lolol!!, a really fun group of tour members and a trip that makes your heart sing every minute of every day...even after you get back home and look back on it.

I am excited and thrilled for you, Lisa, and congratulations to your daughter on her upcoming wedding!!! You sound like someone who would be fun to travel with. What is your website address- I'd love to read about your experiences and I bet a lot of others will too.

Thank you all for your kind replies! It's been so much fun to be able to come here and vent my excitement on my trip, as well as share in the excitement of other's trips! I'm still in shock that this is actually going to happen! Now if I can just get through the very long list of "things to do" before I can leave- that way I can leave without guilt! I still need to find an organist for my daughter's wedding, print and mail out invites this weekend, pay the May bills, get med refills, make my son's schedule for when I'm done, make the "to do" lists for my daughter and hubby and, and, and...

Plus I need to take one last "trip" thorugh my packed carry on bag to do any tweaking, and I have LOTS of tweaking left to do with my daypack. In my twisted efforts to both pack as little as possible and as much as possible simultaneously, I'll probably be walking on the plane looking like an Oompa Loompa from Willy Wonka. I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing five layers of clothes on the plane and have my jacket pockets stuffed with socks or something crazy, lol!

I hear the weather in NE when I leave will be a beautiful sunny day in the high 70's. I hear that my arrival in Amsterdam will be to rain and about 55 degrees, lol. Sounds perfect!

I'm willing to share my website with whomever might like to follow along. However, I'm a bit hesitant to just throw out the link for all to see. So, feel free to PM me and introduce yourself (if we haven't already chatted on the threads here) and I'll be glad to send you the link. Don't know as I'll be here after Sunday, as I'll be in the dentist chair out of town on Monday and on the plane on Tuesday. So try to PM me this weekend.

Lisa,

Your excitement is quite evident. I know you're going to have a wonderful time on the BOE tour, and it will probably be one of the most memorable trips of your life!

I'd be interested to have a look at your website, so if you wish please send me a PM with the link.

Buon Viaggio!

Have a wonderful trip from a fellow Husker. My family and I will be heading to Amsterdam in June to start our Family Europe trip. Their first and my third. Relax and don't try to do too much. Just tell yourself that you will be back again. Once you get that travel bug, you can't get rid of it. I took a second job, so I could continue to travel and I haven't looked back. Happy Travels!

For those of you not following Lisa's (Rankster) blog, her trip has not started out too well. Plane delayed getting to Mn and she had 15 minutes to make connection. At AMS she sat and waited on her bag which arrived a good while after everyone else had theirs and had gone. She has gotten hardly no sleep in 4 days and weather has been very cool and wet for two days. I assured her it will get better. Seems like when you are very tired and worn down, things just happen. Several other things have happened also. Hope today will start turning around for her. She has a good blog, so if you have checked it you know how things have gone so far. Her 21 BOE starts on Sunday. She is checking this site also so wish her well.

Tony,

I've also noticed that Lisa has experienced a few "bumps in the road" at the start of her trip, but she's been handling things well. I'm sure everything will smooth out tomorrow after she's joined the tour. The problems so far will pale in comparison to the experiences that await!

Thanks Pam and Tony for updating folks! I'm glad you mentioned yesterday, Pam, I was fearing maybe my blog was sounding like things were worse than they were. I'm having a great time, just a few bumps in the road. Getting rid of the jet lag helped tremendously!

And yes, getting rid of jet lag really helps. Your writing did not sound like it was jet lagged nor did your pictures look like it. So glad you did plan for a few days in AMS ahead of your tour.

Lisa, I have very much enjoyed your blog so far, you have a great style! It makes me happy to see so many like minded travelers here wanting to follow your blog and read anything we can get our hands on to hold us over between trips! I finally found a place where people "get it." No one in my real life gets this, and the few people I do have that travel go for the relaxing beach vacation or tropical cruise over and over. I think everyone thinks I'm nuts that I work to travel :) Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

Well, I am not sure what hotel they are in in Reutte which should be today, I think, but I believe my memory of the place I stayed on the BOE was the whole group sitting in the bar area checking their email from there! She may not get enough service until Italy.

Thanks for the update, Pam. I was starting to worry about Lisa. But I do remember that when I did BOE, our hotel in Bacharach didn't have wi-fi, so it was a few days before I could post on my own blog. (Well, actually, the hotel did have wi-fi, but it was impossible to access.)

I hope she's having a blast!

Tony, yes you are right. Today is day 5 so they are in Rothenburg tonight, Reutte tomorrow and Saturday. I've let me confuse myself looking at the posting times on FB!

If Lisa's trip was anything like the 21 day BOE trip we just got back from.....it'll be very fun-filled....I had EVERY intention on blogging every night....including a few pictures, etc....but truth be told, I was DOG TIRED every single night! I love the pm I got from Eileen while on my trip to make sure I "enjoyed the moment" and I sure did.

The wifi was sketchy in most hotels......which explains the lack of updates.

Internet in Germany was iffy at best and in Italy pretty nonexistant. When I am able to get on its so slow it takes me about 3-4 hours to journal and upload pictures. Even phone calls have been difficult (it varies a lot depending on room location). If you can get past the lack of WiFi and anywhere from 13,000 to 23,000 (8-13 miles) steps a day (many of them stairs and hills), this trip is awesome! I'm having so much fun, just got to Cinque Terre today and ate pesto and swordfish for the first time (yum!) and waded in the sea! With any luck I'll get posts in in a few hours and then tomorrow. Thanks everyone for following along and being patient with me!

I believe you're correct, and Lisa should be flying home today (probably already home by this time). I worked out the timing based on information in the Blog, and this should be "Day 34".

I know what it's like getting back from a long holiday in Europe, so it will probably be a few days before any new Blog entries appear.

Thanks to everybody following the blog. Sorry there haven't been any updates forever- that will change soon. Internet was a constant issue during the BOE and by the time I got to Scotland post BOE, I was just too exhausted to try.

I got home a week ago to wedding drama after drama (my daughter is getting married in less than 3 weeks). So while I knew we would have a lot to do upon my return, I didn't expect the best man to back out, the soloist to back out, our DJ to back out- and so on and so on! So I've been putting out wedding fires all week long, going to bridal showers, talking to caterers, calling on organists and DJ's... If I can just survive the next three weeks, lol!

I did keep a written journal on the tour, and I have every intention of completing the website/blog ASAP. I hope to finish the Venice days by the weekend. I'll do as much as I can leading up to the wedding, but it might be (probably will be) after the wedding before I finish. I plan on doing NOTHING for the month of July. I'll need it to recover from the trip and the wedding and to rest up before returning to school full time in August!

That being said, the 21 Day BOE was amazing, and even with all of my "troubles" I had a wonderful time and would gladly take the BOE again if the opportunity presented itself. I hope if my blog shows anything, it's that even when things go wrong, and your fitness level leaves a lot to be desired, a good attitude and a sense of humor goes a long way, and to make the most of whatever opportunities for travel you get. The BOE is a strenuous tour and NOT for those who are looking for a laid back and relaxing vacation. You'll be on the go from 8 in the morning until 8 at night unless you opt out of things (which you can- but try not to). I lost weight on the trip and spent much of my time trying to keep my pants from falling around my ankles and exposing me. I tried so many new things- food wise (and I'm the picky-est of eaters), activity wise and saw things that I will never, ever, ever forget. I nearly cried every time we left someplace, because each place was so amazing, you didn't want to leave! And then you reached the new place and went- WOW, and then you didn't want to leave that place, ha ha! You WILL have the most amazing cultural experiences and meet some wonderful people. The guides are exceptional, all of them, the tour guides, the locals guides, the museum guides... My only complaints were the internet issues and my lousy sprained ankle. I can't wait for my next RS experience!

So stay tuned, more updates are coming to the blog. Thanks everybody for your comments and PM's, both here and on the blog. Knowing others were reading about my adventure and seeking out information for their own travels made me more determined to make the most of my own opportunities and journal them thoroughly.

See ya soon!

Lisa,

Great to hear from you! I was wondering how you were doing since returning home. Sorry to hear about all the "wedding issues", but I'm sure you'll get through them with the resilience and sense-of-humour you've demonstrated in your travels. I've found that post wedding can sometimes be a bittersweet experience, as one's child is no longer living at home but at the same time you're welcoming a new member to the family.

Phillip,

Yes, it is against the Forum rules to post links to Blogs, but AFAIK it's permissible for someone to send you the link via a Private Message.

There has been a post here saying that it is forbidden to post the link to a blog.

That is not strictly correct. The quote from Community Guideline number 7 is:

Do not advertise or post fake reviews. Proposing transactions or
promoting your website, blog, hotel, restaurant, uncle's private tours
in Istanbul, etc for financial gain, pumping traffic to your website,
or other marketing intent is prohibited.

That is in the prohibition against advertising guideline. It says not to promote your blog for financial gain or other marketing intent.

Having seen the blog (I wish it were more complete, too - I'm sure that after the wedding it will be) there is clearly no commercial angle and I can't see how it can possibly contravene the guidelines or offend the Webmaster.

In that case I don't believe there is any reason not to post it.

Welcome back, Lisa.

Thanks Phillip. I had send a PM stating that it was not against the rules to post a blog. Did not think it was. A blog is sort of like a mini scrapbook of day by day tour activities. Lisa probably had 30 people ask for the site. She just did not want to post the address for anyone to see it that was not interested in it. Anyone that posted asking for the address got it as far as I know. Pam and I both sent to lots of interested people. Also wish she could have finished it soon after the trip. With her health issues and the wifi problems I knew it would be hard to keep up with. I can only imagine how hard it would be to post a blog like she was doing each evening after ten hours of walking and touring. I know she was up lots of nights till 3am trying to post it. Probably a good thing for her she had so much problem with wifi. Now, I can't wait till the fall to see her scrapbook if she does one.

Hopefully the Webmaster can clarify the issue of posting links to Blogs. The Blog service that Lisa is using doesn't include any commercial links, but some other Blog services do have embedded links for hotels or other tourist related businesses. Those are the ones that may not be able to posted on this forum.

Hi,
I'm late to the party but can offer clarification. To repeat the relevant guideline being cited...

"
Do not advertise or post fake reviews. Proposing transactions or
promoting your website, blog, hotel, restaurant, uncle's private tours
in Istanbul, etc for financial gain, pumping traffic to your website,
or other marketing intent is prohibited.
"

While we are not offended (to use Nigel's word!) by a blog with no advertising, the relevant phrase to pull from our guideline is that "promoting your website/blog... for ... pumping traffic... is prohibited." So, yes, we prohibit people from coming here to link to their blog. Why? Aside from casting aside those who just want to feel good by using our website to bring more traffic to their own blog sites, there are many reasons why and they all flow together. We feel that allowing links to blogs opens up a massive gray area that we just aren't equipped to deal with. Who's going to check to see whether or not a blog is or isn't using advertising on their site? An employee? Forum members? What if there are any mentions or recommendations of products or services? Who decides whether the content is or isn't good enough to warrant a blog to be an exception to our no-promotion policy? As a reminder, it is our position to not make determinations as to what is or isn't good content (the community typically achieves this due to its very nature... something that is more difficult to achieve when content people interact with is linked off site). We feel that if people have relevant advice and input, we want people to share it directly within our community so that it can continue the conversation. Among other things, I can imagine that instead of getting direct advice where it's needed, we'd start getting a number of posts along the lines of "I wrote about that topic once in my 5 page blog post here! {link}. I think we can do without those. :) Our goal to foster a community that gives good travel advice to each other becomes more difficult to achieve the more we send traffic away where people can't respond. Furthermore, there are thousands of people that have a travel blog and I am concerned that we would be inundated with them if we allowed them. At the very least, I know that this would happen in the Trip Reports section and I'd rather like that area to be successful.

Is posting a blog link as egregious as posting an ad? No, I don't ban enthusiastic travelers for that. I usually just delete the link and inform them about our guidelines.

So, with sincere apologies to those who have great travel blogs, we feel that this just isn't the right place for them. We do hope that you'll share your discoveries and advice on our forum as it directly relates to the topics at hand.

Btw, there is one exception to the rule about not posting blog links. I have no problem if people want to link to their blog in their profile's About Me space. I will have a problem if people refer to that in their posts as you may as well be linking to your blog.

Posted by

Thanks for the clarification, Webmaster.

A thought might be to tweak the Community Guidelines along the lines of what you have just posted - only shorter (to save your fingers).

sylviajbly, I'm going to 'hijack' Lisa's thread to ask you if you've watched Rick's Tour Experience video. (This page shows several videos; the ~45m one in the top left corner is the entire video, while the others are individual clips from that video.)

You are also sent this same (free) video DVD when you request a (free) Tour Catalog from this website. You can do that on this page.

Lisa, enjoy this time with your family! I still have your blog 'tab' on my iPad, eagerly awaiting your remaining entries. I'll keep checking it......

Life is finally calming down- for the moment, ha ha. My daughter's wedding went off beautifully and we had a lovely 4th at the lake. I've got about 5 weeks before school starts up again and my goal is to have the blog finished by then. So I'm hoping to have several updates over the next week and steadily after that.

Doubt if she will finish it since it has been months since she returned. Last I heard was that she still planned to do a scrapbook of the trip. What is amazing it that Sept is 1/3 gone and I have yet to see a 2015 scrapbook on the site. Usually always a few posted by this time of year.

I will complete the blog/scrapbook, I promise! Unfortunately, the demands of life, school and some recent health issues have prevented me from being able to complete it by now as I intended. I am working on it with every intention of entering it in the scrapbook contest by the deadline. It's just going slowly.

I really appreciate everybody who has asked for the link, who has read what's there so far and who has commented- either on the blog itself, or personally to me. It means a lot to know you're enjoying it and I love hearing about your own trips and upcoming trips.

If you want the link, please send me a PM and I'd be glad to forward it to you.

It WILL GET DONE! ;-)
