Day Trip From Barcelona

We are in Barcelona mid Sept. 2014, do you have a recommendation for an itinerary/destination for a day trip from the city of Barcelona? What is the best form of transportation to achieve this; train, bus, etc.? We are open to a very long day of travel and we are the adventurous type.

Thank you!

Kinneydk,
Consider taking the train down to Tarragona (~1 hour), this small town has a Roman Amphitheather on the beach, a Roman aqueduct that is in pristine condition, the town has a museum that's interesting and the restaurants in the city center are quite nice. In Roman times Tarragona was the largest city in Spain and considered vital both for commerce and military reasons. If you go, get up and catch the early train because there is so much to see that the day will pass and you still haven't seen all that you will want to!

A couple notes on Tarragona: It does have great Roman ruins and a great archeological museum but the aqueduct is quite some distance from the town. Also be sure to take the coastal train to the city station, not the AVE line which stops at a remote station outside town.

Montserrat is a common daytrip. Nice mountain with dramatic rock formations. The monastery is nice but mostly rebuilt in the 20th century. Easy to do by train and then take the cable car up. If you like hiking this would be a great choice on a nice day.

Figueres is another common daytrip with the attraction being the Dali Museum. Easy by train. Entertaining even if you are not heavily into Dali or Surrealism. This is easily combined with a stop in Girona, which has a nice Medieval city center.
