Hello, we are interested in recommendations for additional travel following the 12 day my way alpine tour which ends in Chamonix. Thank you!
What sounds fun to you? Since your tour ends in Chamonix did you want to head in to France and out of the mountains or did you want to head to perhaps the Geneva Airport and take a quick flight somewhere?
When are you traveling? I'd want to go north in the summer and maybe to Italy in a cooler month (Fall) although I see from your prior post you've done some travel in Italy before.
You’ll be just over 2 hours from Montreux, Switzerland. I spent 5 nights there last June and really enjoyed my time there. Here’s a good video to give you sense of the area to see if it appeals to you:
Add the French cities of Annecy, Lyon, Reims and Paris. Fly out of Paris. All very accessible by train.
We took the train to Innsbruck for a day or two of hiking.
I’m booked on this tour mid-September and plan to stay in Montreux for 3 nights after leaving Chamonix. Then will spend 1 night in Geneva and fly home from there.
From Montreux, I will go to Lausanne to see the Olympic museum, take a boat on Lake Geneva and other activities. Lots to do there.
If you want something different from the Alps, Provence is nearby. There are fast trains from Lyon to Avignon.
We're doing this tour in July. We have another 2 nights to stay after the tour before flying out of Geneva and I'm torn. I'm considering staying in Geneva, Lausanne, or Gruyere...... it will be myself and 2 kids (16 & 20). Convenience-wise I'm leaning towards one of the first 2, but Gruyere looks interesting & fun, esp. for the kids...........So I'm open to any suggestions as well.
Gruyere looks interesting & fun
Those would not be words I would use to describe Gruyere. 😊 I was not impressed when I was there this past June. It was mostly souvenir shops.
Seems like there’s a lot more to do around Montreux-- Chillon Castle, a boat ride on Lake Geneva, train up to Rochers de Naye, walking through the vineyards, etc.
I vote for Lausanne. The Olympic museum is very cool, the city itself is gorgeous and you can hop on and off various ferry boats to explore other towns along the lake, as well as Chillon Castle. And, if you like, take the train (3 hours) to Paris for further adventures.
