We stayed at the Hotel Arlette in 2008 for one night and it is close to the train station. However, I just checked my old emails and it was 175 euros per night, and that is pretty expensive to me. It was very basic but ok. I do remember searching for hotels that were less expensive with no luck. I doubt things have gotten better in the last 3 years...
Good luck.

You might look at easyHotel.com. We'll be staying there later in September so not sure yet just how basic it is. I do think they charge less when you reserve way ahead, so also not sure what you'll find now for price.

I am afraid you are booking pretty late. I checked the two moderately priced hotels we use and they are both fully booked. You might try Priceline. People have gotten very good deals on nice 4 star hotels by bidding. The problem is it likely will not be near the train station.

Hi Joann There's an ETAP hotel for $130 / nite a couple miles away - access via public tram. accorhotels.com. Enjoy your trip!

would that have been in Euros in Zurich? Or CHF? If CHF the dollars would have been lower....

We are big fans of Priceline and got Renaissance Zurich Hotel for $80 per night on three different trips. Very nice hotel and shuttle at the door takes you into city center. Takes about 20 minutes.

stayed at the HIRSCHEN in old town - nice and modern nothing fancy. Friendly staff! right in old town on Niederdorf Str.
its modernized, nice top deck garden, but its the oldest hotel since 1700s (you wouldnt know from the modernized room). Simple but fine. good cellar and cafe below - but we ate across the river!
