Elizabeth, I can't offer any reviews, but you might have a look at www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/ZumBerggeist-Lauterbrunnen-24821/reviews/ as I believe this is the same place.

This appears to be the former Pensione Gimmelwald, which closed at the end of October 2006. I'll try and gather a bit of information from other sources, and will post another note if I find anything significant.

If you're looking for a Hostel in Gimmelwald, the Mountain Hostel seems to get consistently good reviews. You could also have a look at Esther's Guesthouse.

Thank you for the responses so far. Both the Mountain Hostel and the Chalet Fontana are booked for the dates I need, so I appreciate any advice people still have about finding a budget dorm bed. Thanks again!

I was just in Gimmelwald last week and I don't think they are doing the Sleeping in the Straw now.

We stayed at Esther's Guesthouse in her apartment but she has rooms with a common kitchen/dining area, similar to a hostel. Not sure if her prices are what you are looking for. She was not full while we were there.

I don't think the "sleeping in the straw" happens until a bit later in the year, when the cows are re-located to the upper meadows.
