Zugspitz Cable car

Has anyone taken cable car up to top of Zugspitz? They also have a cog rail trip up or down. Planning a trip to Garmisch in July and think kids would really enjoy this. Any hotel recommendations for this area?

The cogwheel train takes over an hour to the top. The Bavarian cable car is most scenic but expensive. The Tyrolean cable car (going to the same summit but from another side of the mountain, not from Eibsee like the Bavarian does) is cheaper but less spectacular. You can also take the train up and the cable car down vv.

We were just there this past fall. We drove to Eibsee and took the cable car up and back. It was a lot of fun and the views from the top were magnificent. Make sure you go on a clear day. I think the kids would enjoy it. It is expensive, but none of us had been to the Alps before, so we thought it was worth it.

We stayed at a great place in Mittenwald -- Gastehaus Edlhuber. If you think you might want to stay in Mittenwald, let me know and I'll tell you more about it. Mittenwald is a cute little town -- smaller and quieter and prettier than Garmish. Depneding on how old your kids are, they may prefer Garmish because it's little livelier.

Just so you know the cost was OUTRAGIOUS!!! 24 or 45 euro a person. There has to be less expensive cable cars in Bavaria. We went in September. It was beautiful. We didn't hike down because we were just doing it as a spur of the moment thing. There are other hikes that are free in Garmish. I think the best top of the mountain experiance is Hitler's Eagle's Nest in east Bavaria.

Thanks to all who replied. They have a Zugspitz pass for 42Euros/person for 3 days of use any many attractions in the area. We will only be there for 2 days, so will price things out. It still might be the way to go, as long as the weather cooperates! We are also planning the Eagles Nest earlier in week.

Carroll,
Do you have more information on Gastehaus Edlhuber in Mittenwald. I am planning a night stay in that town
