Zell am See vs Hallstadt, Austria

I'd like to hear anyone's opinion regarding visiting Zell am See instead of Hallstadt. Would you consider Zell about equal in terms of scenary, places to visit, etc or would it be a mistake to not go to Hallstadt instead if you only had one to choose from?

thanks!

I only went through Zell am See on the train; I didn't stop there, but from what I saw, there is no comparison to Hallstatt. I am one who generally avoids touristy places, but IMO, Hallstatt is the place to go.

Zell is OK if you pass by anyway and can't afford time to go to Hallstadt. But it's definitely not as pretty, picturesque and "unique" as is the area around Hallstadt.

I can only agree with the other posters:

There is more to do in Zell am See, it is a lovely, charming town in any season, it has excellent restaurants, and makes for a great base from which to do excursions in the area from. I am quite fond of it.

But Hallstadt is very, very unique and also very, very picturesque.

IMHO 4 hours is the right time to spend in Hallstadt unless you spend a few additional hours touring the salt mine (which I'd recommend if you're there). Walk down the street, snap some photos of the picturesque street and the houses with the view you can't see because they block it, get a bite to eat. We stayed there on a trip, and in retrospect would have much preferred staying in one of the larger lake towns we went thru on a tour out of Salzburg.

Of course this is my personal opinion; others have found Hallstadt to be everthing they were hoping for.
