Wurzburg-Nurnberg-Rothenburg ob der Tauber

I am thinking of spending 2 nights at one of these towns and day tripping to the others. Which one is a better choice to overnight at? I read in Rick Steve's that Rothenburg is worth spending at least one night at. I will be traveling by train using the Bayern Ticket and we will be coming from Bacharach. Later heading to Munich.

These are all nice stops. Each has some pleasant places to visit and eat after you return from your day trip. The Tages-Ticket Plus might be a better deal between Nürnberg and Rothenburg. Würzburg and Nürnberg have a bit better train connections.

I would pick the one that most appeals to your imagination. You will not make a mistake.

I've stayed in Rothenburg (2 nts), Würzburg (2 nts), and Nürnberg (actually Fürth, 1 nt), so I don't have any strong preference; whatever works best with your schedule.

I once stayed 2 nights in Ansbach and made a day trip to Rothenburg. That worked too. I think the only reason to spend the night in Rothenburg is to take in the nightwatchman's tour, and I don't think that is the only thing in Rothenburg.

If you stay in Rothenburg or Nürnberg, the VGN Tageskarte Plus is valid for unlimited travel (to the other town) for €14,20. It is valid all day on workdays or all weekend. Thus, for instance, if you stayed in Rothenburg on a weekend, you (2 adults) could go to Nürnberg on Saturday, stay Saturday night, and return on Sunday for €14,20.

The normal Bahn fare between Würzburg and Rothenburg is €11,30, one way per person, so a one day trip from Würzburg to Rothenburg for two would be better with a €28 Bayern-Ticket. An overnight trip would be better (slightly) with two normal fare tickets.
