Winter hiking in Austria

My family will be traveling to Austria over the Christmas Holidays and among all of the lovely sight seeing we are interested in doing something physical (but not skiing). Does anyone know if the lovely summer hiking trails are open during the winter as well? Or does anyone have any other ideas for outdooor activities where we can soak up those beautiful mountains?

Maureen, I don't know personally about Austria, but I assume it is similar to the alpine areas of Switzerland in this respect. Most Swiss ski areas and winter resorts have many kilometers of groomed walking paths, called "Winterwanderwege". Here's a list of walking paths in one area of Austria, the Pitztal: http://www.pitztal.com/winter/winter-aktivitaeten/winterwandern-pitztal.html?L=1 If you google the word "Winterwanderweg" with "Austria" or Oestereich" you should find lots more.

Yes of course, there are plenty of hikes open - depending on weather conditions. Consult the winter section of the website of the village you're going. You will definitely find a nice and doable hike...
