can you use SKYPE with wifi?
It may be only with Verizon phones. Tried it with droid phone on verizon service. Notice said "no service on WiFi"
Any suggestions?
Yes, Wifi is just another connection to the Internet. We used Skype for a conference call between the Sacramento group and the Denver group using Panera's Wifi. Unforturnately, it's so noisy at Panera that no one could hear the other person.
As a member of the Sacramento group, I was on that Skype call. Skype works on wi-fi. As Lee says, it was really noisy and the cameras couldn't pick up the entire groups. We had to pass the PC around so that the Denver group could see everybody. They did the same. Still, it was a neat thing to do.
I only use Skype on wifi when in Europe. Its installed on my netbook. I've never used it on a cell phone. I also used the netbook in Suite Novotel hotels and used the ethernet cable instead of the wifi - same result...
Skype (regular version) is available on the Android market or just search "Skype" on the Internet and download directly. You can load money into your account which allows you via Skype to call land lines and cell phones around the world at very cheap rates.
Susan, Verizon Android smart phones can come with "Skype mobile" pre- installed. You cannot use Skype mobile with wifi- you can only use it with Verizon's data network (3g, 4g). You also can't un- install it. So, just don't use that version of Skype. Instead, go to the Android Store and download the regular version of Skype (not Skype mobile). You can have both versions on your phone with no problems. Just use the regular Skype you downloaded from the Android market;
you can definitely use it with wifi or with the Verizon data network.
Thank you! Now if I can just find a 'droid store.

We've used Skype on our iPhones a number of times at wifi cafes and hotels. You need a strong signal for it to work.
I have used Skype on my AT&T iPhone via wifi and it works great. I also have the Google Voice app on my iPhone as well since not everyone uses Skype. We use Google Voice because for free through 12/31/11 and then after for less than $.02/minute we can call anywhere in the US (anywhere in the world since my account is US based) as long we have a wifi connection, and you can text from it too. A great cheap way to avoid international cell phone fees.
Susan as Gary said, the version of Skype pre-loaded on your phone is rigged to just use the cellular network. So it only has an advantage for international calls and only for calls made while you are in the U.S. Sometimes the Android Market is set so it won't show you apps that the cell carrier or phone manufacturer don't want you to put on your phone. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't show you the non-crippled Skype app. That doesn't mean you can't get it, it just will require a bit more trouble to do so. I won't go through all the steps here. Frankly, I'm not sure I know them all and likely would have to do a bit of research. But if you want to try and put it on your phone, send me a private message and we'll see what we can accomplish.
I've used Skype on my iPod with WiFi...and no problems. Used it both in England, Scotland, Ireland, and The Netherlands.
The Skype version that came on my Verizon Android phone was easy to uninstall - not sure why the previous poster had trouble. I also found the full version of Skype on the Android Market. The pre-installed version is useless in the US, too. It still uses your minutes anyway, so there is no advantage to using it over just making a regular call.
Skype Mobile (not Skype the regular version we all know) is an application native to my Verizon Droid phone with truly unknown value. I've tried the normal process to uninstall it without success Also, the staff at the local Verizon store attempted to remove it and it appeared to be so. Later, I checked, and it's still on my phone. Hmmm. Fortunately, I loaded Skype onto the phone and it works great.
