Staying with non-internet savvy friends in Cannes for a week. Wish to take my laptop if it can access wireless internet (or even by cable). Friends are unaware of any cafes or locations in Cannes that support this, but there must be some. Any advice?
McDonalds, Starbucks, or the lobby of most any expensive hotel almost always have WiFi. But since you will be in Cannes why not just walk down the beach promenade until you find a signal; there has to be at least one sidewalk cafe that offers it.
You can check out several sites to get some possible locations. http://wififreespot.com/europe.html , http://www.jiwire.com , http://www.ezgoal.com/hotspots/wireless (look for "Wifi hotspots by country" at the very top)
Okay, I am a dinosaur and do not have a laptop. If I get one to take with me to Europe do I also need a Tmobile, AT&T, etc., service or are hotspots free to use and the laptop just picks up the signal?
Thanks,
Orrin
There are some free WiFi hotpots available at hotels, Mcdonalds, and Starbucks. But typically one has to pay for the service. T mobile and AT&T are different are a different animal, these use the data networks of mobile telephone companies, thus you need to have a service contract to have access.

My mothers' name was Schneider. Saw it all over Germany and then found out it meant tailor.
To purchase a service does it have to be long term like a phone or can you purchast it for 1 or 2 months. If so, what service offers that and do they operate in Europe. I looked at a site and seems that some places offer TMobile wifi and some offer another provider. Seems to me you can have a service but some wifi places may not have your service and then you are out of luck (for that location). Am I correct?
Thanks,
Orrin
I don't know much about the Tmobile type plans, but a lot of WiFi providers have roaming agreements with the major mobile companies. These WiFi providers are usually found in airport terminals and expensive hotels. But I've never quite understood why someone would need to use these WiFi companies when they could simply connect directly with the mobile's own data network which have better coverage.
