Who has tips for Wuerzburg?

My friend has her somewhat elderly parents (70's) and her sister visiting, and has to work a few days this week. They wanted to go to Wuerzburg, so I volunteered to take them. Have never been there though. We are simply taking the train from Frankfurt for a nice day trip. Not too sure how much or how long they can walk, so want to keep it low key, but interesting for them. Lunch somewhere is planned along with seeing the residence. Perhaps a walking tour if it isn't too long or if it isn't too hot on Thur. (it is hot right now here)

So, suggestions please from all you Wuerzburg experts!

We always make two tourist stops in Würzburg: the Residenz and the Festung across the river.

The Residenz is Rococo/Baroque and my wife really likes it. I am less enamored of style but that is all personal choice. We both agree that the garden is great.

The Festung (castle) might be a bit far to walk for elderly parents. I know that it is serviced by bus but we always walk to it. A taxi might be the bet if you decide to go that route. The Festung has its castle grounds and a very good view of the Käppele (chapel) across the river. It also has two museums, one devoted to Franconia (Mainfränkisches Museum) and the other devoted to the city, including a model of what the bombed city looked like just after WWII. The Mainfränkishces Museum has my favorite piece of German art, Trauernde Maria aus Acholshausen by Riemandschneider. The lady once hung outside a builders shop from a medal loop attached to her head (still there).

A plain, good German restaurant is at the Hotel St. Josef on Semmelstraße not far off Theaterstr. which is the route you would likely follow between the Residenz and the train station. I only have been there for supper, not sure about lunch.

The Alte Mainbrücke with statues of saints is also a very nice and affords views of both the town and the castle.

Gary pretty well covered it. I agree with him, the Residenz is over the top, but the Festung Marienburg is great.

If you are really wealthy, the ICE makes it from Frankfurt Hbf to Würzburg in 54 min. If you want to do it economically, the RE takes 2 hours. You can purchase an RMV group day ticket to Kahl am Main for €22. That will cover your trip to Kahl in the morning and back from Kahl that evening. Kahl is in Bavaria; once you are in Kahl, a Bayern-Ticket will cover all three of you to Würzburg and back to Kahl. If you buy the B-T from a DB automat in the Frankfurt Hbf, you won't even have to get off in Kahl. The RMV ticket covers you on the RE to Kahl and the Bayern-Ticket covers you the rest of the way.

I think the Bayern-Ticket also covers conveyances in the city of Würzburg. There is a streetcar from in front of the Hbf to the base of the mount at Marienburg. There is also a bus from the Hbf all the way to Marienburg.

I would take them to the Residenz (and chapel) first. Afterward stroll in the garden. If they still have energy, tour the Festung.

We had a lovely sunny day, and everything worked like clockwork with the train tickets. Thank you Lee as always. Got off the train in Würzburg, went to the tourist info desk, he said there was a bus leaving in 5 min. to go to the Residenz, so off we went. Walked in, and go there about 5 min. before the 11:00 English tour. That was perfect as the next one wasn't til 15:00. The tour is free and it is the only way to go see the South Wing. At 45 min. it was just right. Wandered through the North Wing, and then went over to the Hof Chapel. It has such a non-descript door, that it does kind of blow you away when you open the door and see all the gilt, and paintings, and the plaster work. We ate at the beer garden and strolled just a little bit in the garden, but it was really too hot for that. Went down to the Dom and St. Kirlian, both very nice and impressive. Walked up on the old bridge, which gave a nice view. I really wanted to go eat in the mill house restaurant there, and will try to get back soon to do just that. The 2 seniors were flagging fast, so we hopped on the strassenbahn and went back to the bahnhof. I knew the train schedule, so we only had 20 min. to wait.

Everyone really liked this and wished we had enough time and energy to make it up to the Festung. This is a town where you do need to spend at least a night and devote two to sightseeing. Though the Residenz is certainly over the top in decor, (cough, cough) it is still majorly impressive. Once you learn what the different paintings are about, it becomes highly interesting.

Favorite room? hm, the White Room plasterwork is wonderfully fantastic, but I think I like the huge, painted, domed ceiling over the stairway, with the 4 continents represented and the odd statues coming out of the wall the best. Oh, and the Mirror room, and the wooden floor in the Green room.

What is your favorite room there?
