Who's been to Corsica? Advice needed!

Working on researching Corsica and in which city I would like to base myself for a 5 day stay. I would like to start by saying that I am working on researching online and looking through books but would really appreciate getting anyone's input that has been there. By this point in the trip I will have been on the road for about 20 days and have done a lot of hiking and site-seeing so all I am looking for in Corsica is a nice sandy beach, NOT over-run family resort area...some shops and restaurants and bar. Doesn't need to be fancy. I think I am interested in Calvi or Proto Vecchio or Ajaccio as a base. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I LOOOVE Corsica, and 5 days is perfect. I was only there for 3. We flew into Bastia, stationed ourselves in Calvi, and visited Ajaccio. The car rides were BEAUTIFUL. I would suggest staying in Calvi.

Thanks Alexander. I am not planning to rent a car. From what I have read, having a car IS the way to go but I am hoping to get by without it. I read about a little tram around the part near Calvi and a limited train service. I think that would be fine with me. I mostly just want to go on the beach, do some shopping, have some good food and drink....CHILL OUT!!!

It's the perfect place to chill out. Bastia was by far one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. In fact, I hope to retire there someday. It has the perfect blend of Italy and France. I remember sitting at a cafe in a harbor and thinking "This is true happiness." My friends agreed. Please let us know how much you enjoy yourself

Calvi is good choice...the beach won't be empty, but plenty of sand and there's god food up the hill and at the harbor...We've been there several times while going from one end of the island to the other.
