Which Would You Choose...Left Bank or Right?

We are planning to spend next New Years in Paris and will be staying a week. I want to get an apartment, rather than stay at a hotel. I am trying to decide between the Latin Quarter (5th) and the Marais (4th). The apartment I am considering in the 5th has a nice view of Notre Dame, I can pay in dollars, but is up 4 flights of stairs. The apartment in the 4th is only up 2 flights, has a computer, but I will have to pay in Euros. Other than that they have most of the same amenities. We stayed in the 7th before, but besides the Eiffel Tower nothing else was very convenient. Both the 4th & 5th seem to have much more in easy walking distance, plus plenty of metro stops. Any advice would be appreciated.

Largely based on personal preference I think. You are right that they are both easily accessible to metro stops as well as many major sights. I prefer the atmosphere of the 5th, but I would also happily stay in the 4th. View of Notre Dame sounds hard to pass up!

whats the old french saying... the right bank spends while the left bank thinks (if i got it correct - rich side vs bohemian/student side)

The 6th is a great area with great access to ND, the museums, lots of cafes, parks, etc. Check vacationinparis.com and Iloveparisapartments.com

Thanks for the responses. Both apartments look like great locations, although in many ways I lean towards the Latin Quarter. The main issue with that place is the thought of climbing 4 flights of stairs a least once a day after all the walking I know we will be doing!
