Which Paris Arrondissement?

I will be spending a week in Paris this summer and am trying to settle on an Arrondissement to rent an apt in. I will be with a party of 6, want to be centrally located where I can walk to many sites, would like a safe area and would like to have access to good cafes, restaurants, etc. I am honing in on St Germain but was wondering if anyone had any other thoughts?

I agree with Pat, my favorites are the 4th (Marais & Ile Saint Louis), the 5th (Latin Quarter) and the 6th (St. Germain) as close to the river as possible. Very safe area, lots of cafes/restaurants, and easy to walk to lots of sites. Don't miss visiting the Luxembourg Gardens in the 5th.

4th 5th or 6th would all be great, but if you haven't rented a place yet I would get on with it,, your choices are narrowing as places book up,, especially for a group of six!

I also think the 4th, 5th and 6th are the most central. The closer to the river the better.

We have stayed at the Le Littre (6 arron.) twice in the past three years. We loved the hotel and the location. We were close to the Metro. The second time we stayed there, we booked a special room. It had its own balcony and a complete view of the Eiffel Tower. We could sit out on our balcony at night and watch the lights of the Tower and of the beautiful city.. It stays light until 11:00 PM in May and June. We booked the room directly with the hotel on their website. You can't get the balcony rooms on regular travel sites.
