After renting a car at CDG, we travel in France for 10 days, staying our last two nights in Montherme, Ardennes. We plan to take the train to Amsterdam on Sat., May 7, arriving by 17 or 1800 hours. We do not want to drive to Paris just to return the car. We need suggestions for the best city to return car and catch the train. I guess that the car returns are usually in the train stations, even in the smaller cities?
If you want to head in the direction of Amsterdam, you could drop it off at the Charleroi, Belgium airport (aka Brussels South airport) or go a bit further to Brussels' main airport. You'll likely have to pay a dropoff fee for not returning the car in France. If you left it in Reims you'd still have to go via Paris to get to Amsterdam by train. Seems like it would be less trouble to just go ahead and drive the car on to Amsterdam (about 4.5 hrs).
You need to check out what the charge would be to return the car in another country. There are often very high charges for that.
Lille, France, about 2 1/2 hours from Montherme, has a major train station. In checking the DB schedule, it's about a 4 hour train ride with one stop to Amsterdam.
