Where would you stay for one night in southern Germany?

I would like your input on where to stay for one night that we don't have booked for our trip through Germany. We are flying into Frankfurt, then 4 nights in Bacharach, 1 night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, 6 nights in Garmisch. After Garmisch we will be heading into St. Johann im Pongau, Austria for a week. We will be taking numerous day trips from all these cities/villages. We still have one night not booked after we leave Garmisch and before we get to Austria. We will be using public transportation. Where would you stay. Thanks for all your suggestions.

It seems to me that the best way from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Sankt Johann is via Innsbruck. That might be a logical place to send the night. Closer to Garmisch is Mittenwald. On the other side of Innsbruck is Hall, but I feel Hall is over-rated.

Not knowing whether it's going to be one of your day trips, I would spend a night in Salzburg. It's 3 1/2 hours from Garmisch, however, it's only an hour from St. Johann. There's a lot to see and do and it's a small, compact city.

I don't have a suggestion, but just wanted to say enjoy Garmisch! I was there last summer and loved it. Don't know what time of year you will be there. Winter will be more crowded, but of course beautiful and have a lot of winter-time activities with skiing, toboggan rides and such. I was there in summer and there was beautiful views and hiking. Wish I could remember the names of restaurants I enjoyed, but do use the Garmisch-Partenkirchen website because they extensively map out and list restaurants and other activities in the area.

Hi Susan, I'd have to agree that if you don't plan on visiting Salzburg make this your one night. With the time you'd have it would give you enough time to see quite a bit, as it's old town is pretty compact and easy to walk around. If Salzburg is already in your plans as a day trip from St. Johann, we like Hall in Tirol quite a bit. Stayed here 4 times since '01. One of our favorite places to stay anywhere is here... Gasthof Badl. Close to the train station (maybe 5 to 10 min. walk) and same to the old town pedestrian zone of Hall in Tirol. One of our favorite restauarants anywhere is here also... the Berg Taverne (in Burg Hasegg), just across the footbridge from the Gasthof Badl. http://www.badl.at http://www.erlebnisgastro.at/burgtaverne/burgtaverne.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/362561/index.html http://www.worldisround.com/articles/324697/index.html Paul

Not sure how long you'll take on the train, but it's only a 2.5-3 hr drive between the two. You most likely have to go through Salzburg to get St.Johann iP on the train. Stay in Salzburg a night or just head to the final destination and use the extra time to see Salzburg the next day, rather than stopping into another hotel for one night.

Thanks everybody. Been reading RS book about Salzburg and also Innsbruck/Hall. These two seem like the best options. Now I need to narrow it down to one. If we did Salzburg, any suggestions on B&B to stay? Also did anyone do the Sound of Music tour? Is it worth while? We will be there the middle of September. Thanks to everybody

We stayed on the outskirts of Salzburg at Haus Ballwein. The 15 minute bus ride leaves from the front of the B&B to the city. The rooms are very large, modern and with a balcony. My daughter and I really enjoyed the Sound of Music tour. Not everyone recommends it, however, we liked it.

Thanks everyone for your input. We are going to stay in Salzburg, seems like there is a lot to see but a good city to walk about. May also do Innsbruck/Hall as a day trip from St. Johann I'm Pongau.
