I am planning a trip for early September 2010 to Germany, Austria, Switzerland @ 14-16 days. I think I would like to drive south from Frankfurt --- to?? Suggestions on cities / loctations to see along the way? Where to stay in Swizterland / Austria in the Alps?

One question that occurred to me immediately after reading your post - have you had a look at the RS Germany / Austria / Switzerland 14-day tour? It starts in a location not far from Frankfurt (St. Goar) and would be an excellent and efficient way to see that part of Europe.

Rick's tour itineraries are great for inspiration, but you have to be exceptionally fleet of foot to put them into effect for yourself. I'd consider adding a day (or more) for every two that you crib from his routes.
That said, I have no personal experience with this tour. it's just a general observation.
