Before we get to Amsterdam, we arrive in Calais, travel by car to Bruges and spend 1 night. Then we spend 2 nights in Amsterdam. I am mixed about spending a night in Brussels before moving onto Paris, or just spending an afternoon there and find a nice village to spend the night before we go to Paris. Appreciate any suggestions.
If you are interested in history, you could spend some time at Waterloo, just outside Brussels. Another option would be to go to Giverny and visit Monet's Garden. If you do the latter, don't miss Les Andylys and visit Chateau Gaillard, built by Richard the Lionheart in 1188. It has a magnificent view overlooking the Seine. It is quite close to Giverny and well worth the detour.
Hi Valerie, We visited Malmedy, a beautiful small town in the Battle of the Bulge area (eastern Belgium). It is closer to Amsterdam, but the drive to Paris is not too bad, and the roads are good.
If you're a young adult, an evening in Leuven, the university city just to the east of Brussels, may interest you. Other than some medieval university buildings, there isn't much here of pure touristic interest. But if school is in session, evenings on the market square cafes offers the best, but laid-back, social scene I have encountered in Europe.
Thank you Charlie and John. I will check out both places.
Thank you Tom but we are 55 young!
