Our current schedule for our trip is: Krakow – 3 nights Salzburg – 3 nights Prague – 3 nights Rothenburg OT – 1 night Fuessen – 2 nights
Munich – 1 night I'm travelling by car in this last portion and will arrive in Rothenburg by 2pm. We will head to Fuessen the next morning. We'd like to visit at least Neuschwanstein. Not yet determined whether we would visit Hohenschwangau. Also would like to drive to Oberammergau, GaP and visit the gorge there. I would rather not drive the car into downtown Munich but would rather drop the car and train into town. I've discovered I can drop it off in GaP so we could then take an early train to Munich and have the last day visiting there. 2 of the 3 of us have been in Munich before, so we are happy just with the 1 day. Discovering this, it would probably make more sense to stay the night before in GaP. However, this would then have us staying the last 4 nights in 4 different towns. Like most on this site, I prefer a minimum of 2 nights per location when possible but in this case it maybe makes sense to keep on the move? I would appreciate your experiences in the area to help determine where it would make the most sense to stay the 2 nights before Munich or should we stay in Fuessen the 1 night, then GaP the other. I also wondered if we should be booking the castle tour in advance for the afternoon travelling from Rothenburg. It happens to be a holiday that day so could be even more crowded than usual but as other things are likely to be closed, thinking it would make sense to visit the castles that afternoon rather than the next morning.
GAP can work as a decent "base" to do the castles, Oberamergau, etc., so I would consider staying all nights there. We live in Stuttgart but frequently go to GAP to ski, bring family, etc. Dropping the car there and training to the airport is very doable. Send me a private message and I will tell you where we stay if interested. I'm not sure about the Castles on the holiday. If it's on a day when people are going home, it may not be bad. If it's sandwhiched between some other days, it could be bad.
