Any suggestions on a town to stay at south of Munich during Oktoberfest? Our idea is to travel around that area for a few days, using a small town as a base, and then stop in Munich for one night on our way back to the states to experience Oktoberfest. That one night will just about fill our beer quota.
Thanks,
Wil
The first question that comes to my mind is how far outside of Munich do you want to stay?
If you want to stay within the MVV (Munich metro district), so you can come in on the S-Bahn, there is Herrsching, a short bus ride from Andechs, or Tutzing or Starnberg on Starnberger See.
A little farther south, in area south of Holzkirchen that you can get to via the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), are resort areas like Bad Tölz, Tegernsee, and Schliersee.
Or, you could try staying in Rosenheim. Nothing really there but closer to Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, Herrenchiesee, and Innsbruck.
If you are open to staying west of town, Landsberg am Lech is within an hour by train from Munich Hbf. I stayed in Augsburger-Hof in 2007, the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest, and there rates were not raised.
We are staying in Augsburg during Oktoberfest. It's south of Munich. About an hour away by train.
We are staying in Schliersee during Oktoberfest. It is an hour or a little less by direct train from Munich.
Judy, perhaps you need a better map. (Hope you don't get lost.)
Augsburg is West (42 min) and North (9 min) from Munich.
It's actually almost due North of Landsberg.
