Where to stay outside of Munich?

Hi,
I am looking at flying into Munich during Oktober Fest. With the price of hotels during this time we aren't able to afford staying in Munich (we plan on saving Munich for another time). We would like to work our way to Salzburg. We are looking for somewhere to stay maybe an hour away from Munich. Where would you recommend we go to, to recover from jet lag and relax?
Thanks,
Wendy

Wendy,

Here's a very nice place you might want to check out. It's on the way from Munich to Salzburg, just over the Austrian border.

I'd stay in Landsberg am Lech (huge pdf file, try also www.landsberg.de). It's less than an hour by train (change in Kaufering) from the Hbf in Munich. I was there in 2007 for the last night of Oktoberfest, and their rates were not raised. I stayed at Augsburger Hof, which is about a block off of the main square (Hauptplatz).

Lee beat me to Landsberg...

You could also try Augsburg.

"It's on the way from Munich to Salzburg, just over the Austrian border."

Tom, I'm afraid I have to disagree with "on the way ... to Salzburg".

Zum Schluxen is near Füssen, 2 hours SW of Munich; Salzburg is 2 hours east of Munich.

Other Tom, Augsburg is probably closer, at least time wise, but I don't know if hotels there increase their rates for Oktoberfest.

The area around Holzkirchen (south of Munich) is very scenic. Holzkirchen is at the end of the S3 S-Bahn line coming out of Munich. The S-Bahn gets out there in 43 minutes. There are also regional trains of the Bayerische Oberlandbahn that do it in 25 min. Unfortunately you would have to go through Munich Hbf, which is probably crowded at Oktoberfest.

From the airport, you might try going NE away from Munich to Landshut. You can take the bus (about 25 min) from the airport to Freissing Bahnhof and catch a train from there to Landshut. Regensburg is also on that line, further out.

Appreciate the correction. We stayed at the Gusthof zum Schluxen a few years ago on our way from Munich to Salzburg. It was a wonderful place, bargain priced. On day 2 we had plenty of time to visit castle Neuschwanstein & we still made it to Salzburg by midafternoon. I'm sure there are many great places to stay between Munich & Salzburg; this was just our experience.

Tom, I'm not saying Zum Schluxen isn't a nice place. I think Rick's tours stay there. I personally prefer Pfronten, just over the border in Germany, but that whole Tirol area is beautiful.

However, if it's on the way to to Salzburg, so is Washington, D.C. And Reutte's more than an hour from Munich. I was just trying to answer within the constraints of her question.

In that vein, maybe she wants a place no more than an hour from the airport, not from downtown Munich. In that case I have to reiterate my recommendation for Landshut, since MUC to the Hbf is 40 min right there.
