I would like recommendations for where to stay in Zermatt, Switzerland at the base of the Matterhorn. I would like to pay less than $100 USD per night for 2 people. Any low-cost hotels you have tried
When are you going? Zermatt is expensive, even for Switzerland. It will be difficult to find a room in Zermatt at that price (around 120 CHF) unless you are going at low season. My Zermatt tourist guide show some hotels with double rooms at that price during low season, and possibly mid-season, but not high season: 2 stars: Testa Griglia (if you choose a room without ensuite bath); Rhodania (also without bath); Cima; Blauherd. 1 star: Weisshof (rooms with bath start at 122), Annex Antika (100 to 126 CHF), Bahnhof (76 to 114); Le Mazot (120 without bath, 130 with). There are also hostels with double rooms: Matterhorn Hostel (92 CHF without bath): Welcome (130 CHF with bath); Tannenhof ((85 to 90 without bath, 120 to 130 with).
I LOVED Zermatt ,, but oh my it is incredibly expensive. We only stayed 4 nights because of cost, but it was worth it. This was almost 7 years ago, but at that time I noticed a tenting type hostel campground up there, I have no idea if it is still there, it is just a field with a small hut that seemed to sell hot soup , beer, and have washrooms.
Have you thought of a hostel?
Hotel Garni Tannenhof is possibly the closest hotel to your needs. It is, by Swiss standards, dirt cheap. It was also clean with a decent breakfast.
